The first test-tube baby created from an egg matured in the laboratory and then frozen has been born in Canada, in a breakthrough offering hope to women with cancer and others unsuited to normal IVF treatment.

The baby is doing well and another three women are pregnant by the same method, researchers told a medical meeting in Lyon, France, on Monday.

“We have demonstrated for the first time that it is possible to do this and, so far, we have achieved four successful pregnancies, one of which has resulted in a live birth,” Hananel Holzer of the McGill Reproductive Center in Montreal said in a statement.

But Holzer and other experts believe it has the potential to become one of the main options for fertility preservation. Women diagnosed with cancer are likely to be the main beneficiaries, since cancer treatment can make them sterile and they often have no time to take fertility drugs.

Another avenue opens for alternatives when women face involuntary sterility because of medical treatment or illness. Choices are always welcome.

Let’s hope that the new technique will not stimulate women with hormone drugs or something. And let’s hope it doesn’t have any side effects. After all it has to be safe for the ladies that will use it, right?

I know a woman at a certain university near me that does massive amounts of biomedical research. She is saying they have been doing this with slaughtered cow ovaries for years. She has the job of going through the buckets of ovary tissue then dissecting them for the correct tissue, then they put the tissue in a vat of hormones, and voila, unfertilized cow eggs. Then they bulk fertilize the cow eggs and put them in individual petri dishes, read the proteins coming off of the eggs and they can tell which eggs will make for tasty cows.

This is only new in that this process is for humans.

No difference between women and cows in your world. Eh, GregA?

    Adoption is an option.

I think Woz has been eating these unfertilized cow eggs, damn he’s fat, have you seen him?

Just what we need…another way to make more people. As if the planet isn’t infested with enough of them already.

    Seriously!

#6 – I agree. This method makes humans. Humans are an evil plague. Humans cause Global Warming (TM) . Humans must be eliminated.

Not wanting kiddies myself, I am always “amused” by those with a mania to do so. Yes, why not adopt?

    Ego!

And I would think with my type not reproducing and those types who do that we would futher evolve into a species completely driven to do so like Spock in a rut. You can see it in folks that freeze their bone marrow and spend a bucket of dough just to get the job done.

This was a favorite rant of mine from a men’s rights blog:

“More complete anti-male crap from a corrupt government. All the Child Support industry is there to do is to keep the flow of money going from hard-working men to spend-happy women.

Why should we men have to pay for women’s children? After all, children do, in fact, belong to women in this society.

Women get to choose whether to abort the baby. They virtually get automatic custody. Fathers are not required officially, as single women can get IVF treatment. A ‘family’ is now a mother and her children, with a father as optional.

So, shut up about demanding men pay for ‘their’ children; they are not theirs!

It cannot be said often enough; children belong to women now. That’s the primary principle in defining a Matriarchy, which the US now is. Hence women can damn well support ‘their’ children, not the dad – who is only referred to as such when it comes to taking responsibility – and not us taxpayers.”

Does this technique mean the end of unmarried men being forced to have to pay child support? God, I hope so.
