So I admit it: I bought an iPhone.

That was the easy part. But I should have realized that if the customer service whizzes at AT&T could find a way to mar what was otherwise a perfectly pleasant experience, they would. After nearly nine hours, AT&T has yet to activate my iPhone, and it can’t be used until then.

When I got home, I plugged the phone into our media-server iMac and typed in my information in iTunes. I received an e-mail message at 12:10 a.m. saying: “AT&T is now processing your activation. You will receive an e-mail confirmation once your activation is complete.” I had an existing AT&T account, so I figured that adding the $20/month iPhone wireless plan shouldn’t take too long.

Then I waited. And waited. And waited.

Great idea: Putting the iPhone on sale Friday evening. Now buyers have to wait all weekend to get service… and NONE of the functions work untill service is turned on, not even music.

#34, Gregory, you are correct. Perhaps I’m just extra cranky because of all the flooding and no clear skies for the past 10 days = no scope time. But lots of time to catch up on reading. 🙂

Heck, I love a new toy as much as anyone, but all this hype, moaning, whining, etc.?? It’s just a (really expensive) phone!

#36, faustus, Correct me if wrong, but I think it was PTBarnum who said “There’s a sucker born every minute.”

  2. James Hill says:

#29 – Going with CNET, are you? I remember when I took them seriously, too.

Nevertheless, I wish EDGE was faster… But the speed difference between it and Verizon’s EVDO is negligable to me.

As for your comments regarding the detractors, I’m having a hard time taking even the serious ones seriously: All of them tend to talk more about the hype than the specs.

  3. mike says:

having used this for a whole day now, i can truly say that any shortcomings pale in comparison to how amazing the things it does do are. I expect that many of the missing features, such as MMS, will be added in a future software update

  4. doug says:

#39. In a number of cases, CNET has tilted the balance for me either for or against a tech item. Most recently, it was my current TV. They (and their reader reviewers who chime in with real-world experience) haven’t led me wrong, yet.

Hype like this will inevitably provoke a backlash because said hyped device – in addition to being a very slick piece of tech – does have flaws, and some of those flaws will be deal-breakers for some people.

I tend not to take the absolutist detractors seriously, but give more attention to those who point out specifics that they have a problem with. Edge was a definite trade-off for Apple (battery life and coverage map vs. speed), and those trade-offs will get a lot of attention. Me, I will very likely wait for a faster connection, since I would probably use it primarily as an internet device.

More subjective complaints about the touch-screen UI have to be taken with a grain of salt – I distinctly remember a BYTE columnist in the 80s who said that the mouse would never catch on because people would not want to take their hands off the keyboard. A personal preference rears its head in the guise of an objective evaluation.

  5. Gregory says:

pedro, that at least made me laugh, well done.

No I didn’t camp out for the 360, I got one a month ago. Camping out is for idiots (example – I just walked into the SF Apple store and bought one on Sat, in and out in 5 mins tops).

I’m not trying to evangelize the iPhone, you either want it or you don’t. You seem to have missed where I was asked about the iPhones performance – I answered the questions, not randomly pimped the phone.

And you’re right – it’s just a phone, I am, and I was using it. Not trying to justify anything. You’re the one that seems to have their panties in a bunch over it… with all the nerd and star wars insults. I bought it because I needed a net capable phone… and I’m enjoying it as such, nothing more nothing less. I never claimed browsing the net was new, that’s your little strawman.

Why are you so bitter about that?

  6. Podesta says:

I waited in line for the iPhone for the experience. One doesn’t get to experience the advent of something that will change technology every day. Furthermore, it is fun talking to fellow fans and browsing even more of them in iPhone lines all over America while waiting. I think that what the Pedros of the world most fail to understand is: Life is short. You should try to enjoy it while you can. Here’s hoping someone introduces these people to pleasure before they die.

  7. hhopper says:

I don’t understand all the bickering over the iPhone. It’s a cool device. I just don’t want one myself. I don’t need all the functions. And I like the cellular service I have now. Alltel has much better signal coverage in my area than AT&T.

  8. GregA says:

    #44,

Because after listening to apple fanboys for 20+ years now I want apple to fail and fail baddly in a very public way so that they just shut up.

  9. mauvis says:

#45 Havent you found nothing better to listen to for the last 20 years?

    Those extremes doesnt help anyone.
For extreme praise or for hate what does it take?
A bunch of people with nothing better to do.
Dont suffer all the hype about a cell phone. Find something else to do, please!

  10. James Hill says:

I find it interesting that the anti-iPhone guys here lost this argument yet can’t shut up. There’s a definition for people like this: Losers.

#41 – Well stated. The EDGE network is working well enough for me, but I’m also heavily using WiFi. If I had to use EDGE the majority of the time it would be another conversation.
