British Steam Car Challenge — FYI.
The motive power is a two stage steam turbine and is fed by a boiler that is fired on LPG. The 13 inch diameter turbine drives an epicyclical gear train with a 4:1 ratio for a wheel speed of 3000 RPM at 200 MPH.

I think they should have talked to someone who’s run Bonneville. Their projected top speed margin is likely to be too small, e.g. 215mph capacity vs. 200mph target. Until you walk the flats, you never know how bumpy and non-flat the Flats really are.
A smarter capacity should be a theoretical 225-230mph. They’ll need the cushion. I think.
In Whitby, Yorkshire there is a tourist bus there that is a converted mining vehicle that is coal-powered steam engined…. fantastic machine.
I’d love to have one of those…. not sure how they do on emissions tests though…..
Steampunk rules!
As I posted in the Forms…
Im waiting for someone to release a few restrictions on Laser tech.
Using that as a heat source, would only involve electricty, as with many hybreds.
Why use coal. A microwave is a very fast/efficient means of energy transference to boil water, create steam.
yeah…
Electricity is the hardest energy to store. Heat sources produced by electricity are also not very efficient, so that’s why there’s no practical laser or microwave vehicle.
Chemical energy such as Gasoline or Coal produce direct heat and gases that can more effectively propel a turbine.
Coal smells really nice though…. okay, its not the most environmentally friendly, or the best for people’s health, but it does smell nice….surely smelling nice counts for something….
I wonder how long before that baby is in Jay Leno’s garage? (I don’t think his Stanley Steamer will be much competition 🙂 )

Anything to avoid developing the electric car. Of which there already are several models in existance. But the technology can always stand more tweeking. Yet, these lame “alternative” keep making the news. Why not a car that runs on BS? There’s an endless supply of that being produced in Washington DC, which we will never be about to deplele in our lifetime.
But seriously, go rent the movie “Who Killed the Electric Car”. Hey! What about a car that runs on Hemp?!
