Poison control

MIAMI — A Florida company issued a nationwide recall Monday of toothpaste it imported from China and distributed to wholesalers, saying the product may contain a poisonous chemical.

Gold City Enterprise, based in Hallandale, Fla., said the roughly 170,000 recalled toothpaste products may contain diethylene glycol, a thickening agent used in antifreeze and as a cheaper substitute for the sweetener glycerin.

    And from China:

BEIJING — China played down international concerns about tainted food exports on Tuesday, saying the problems were not as bad as reported and displaying seized counterfeit products to show authorities were enforcing safety protections.

To make its case, the government organized a rare visit by more than 100 foreign and domestic reporters to a food safety lab and storehouse where bogus goods from chewing gum to soy sauce were stacked on shelves and arrayed in rows.

Seems like too little, too late.

    Let the hangings commence.

  2. David Kerman says:

Wait, wasn’t this toothpaste caught killing people in panama about a month ago?

Why is this company only recalling them in america now?

Guess I won’t be ingesting anything “made in china” for a while

  3. KVolk says:

This seems like an extreme way to lower our trade deficit with China.

  4. Ed Roberts says:

    @David Kerman

You’d be surprised how many things are recalled overseas well before the US. As an example: If my memory serves me correctly, the recall of Bausch and Lomb contact solution was done in Asia approx 1 month before in the US.

  5. KagatoAMV says:

I wonder how long it will be before we see a few products touted as “100% China Content Free”?

Sold at a higher price of course.

  6. ECA says:

Has anyone read the Back of the tube lately??

    WARNING: do not swallow.

And have you looked up the ingredients, besides?

Best mouth wash…Vodka, straight, rinse and….

  7. Milo says:

KagatoAMV : I think you’ve hit upon an American solution. No don’t some lobby group will sue for racism though.

  8. Angel H. Wong says:

Who buys this kind of toothpaste anyway?

  9. joshua says:

This is a dated story. China recalled the toothpaste after problems in Mexico a couple of months ago and have already arrested the company’s officials…….seems it even got a few Chinese citizens.
On a lighter note, they won’t have any problems with people dying in Britain. 🙂

Go ahead…flame me, I just bought a new flame retardent suit….uh oh, it says….made in china!!!!

  10. mark says:

    8. Poor people, get it now?

  11. hhopper says:

#9 – I wonder why this country wasn’t notified of the recall?

  12. Angel H. Wong says:

    #11

    See #10’s answer.

  13. John Paradox says:

How about the seven and a half million pounds of Ground Beef that got recalled for e coli?
    (pre-packaged, which I never get)

    J/P=?

  14. joshua says:

#11…hhopper….you know when I read the story about the bad toothpaste, it only talked about the stuff having been shipped to Mexico and Central America. There was no mention of the states in that story.
The Chinese found out because people got sick and a few died and the Mexican goverment demanded that China do something. That call coincided with some Chinese people getting very ill after using the same stuff. The British knew, because the story was on the BBC News site.

  15. Fábio says:

Here in Brazil, I try to avoid buying Chinese goods, specially food and drugs.
It can’t be expected, from a country with no regard to its own citizens, to care about the health of people from other countries that buy their stuff.
