The search engine (Google) has made significant progress in recent weeks signing content partnership deals for YouTube. But a growing number of studio executives, irritated by no-shows at meetings and canceled test programs, say they are frustrated with Google’s inability to scrub the site of copyright-infringing material.
Increasingly, media executives are wondering whether the video-sharing giant is doing its best to come up with copyright-protection technology or playing a game of chicken in which billions in sales and perhaps the future of copyright law is at stake.

And the problem is? 😉
This is what you get when Lawyers run businesses. Real businessmen would see all the tech advances for what they really are….a way for them to make even more money.
Ban lawyers from running anything not directly related to law. Outlaw them in politics as well.
My initial thought was that this is just another variation of the patent abuse posted below re Bill Gates. But it is different, requiring a different response.
We can all imagine a world where there is no concept of “copyright.” You write a song, and anyone else can sing it, record it, sell it, and so forth. What kind of world would that be?
We can all imagine a world such as we have. You write a song, a corporation buys it, and prevents anyone from singing it, recording it, selling it, for xx years ((protected time period keeps getting extended by legislation)). What kind of world would that be?
Where are the equities and protectable interests? Should difficulty of enforcement be part of any analysis?
In short, I think copyright should be granted to fewer types of original creation (eg lyrics and melodies) and for a much more limited time – eg 5 years. Society should spend its time on what is new and original, not what is old.
Let the lawyers eat youtube alive for all I care.
It’s only a matter of time before thevideobay.org is up for everyone!!!
What a bunch of humorless, imagineless drones.
These idiots dont want free publicity, they want publicity they can charge for.
As quickly as YouTube removes a video, it gets reposted multiple times.
And that is the key; the world must make a choice. Do we want the fast reaction time and multiplied originality of user-creation, or do we want the conformity and fat cats of the media empire?
My only advice is, aim for the exhaust port.
Whenever Google’s stock cracks $500 I start seeing stories like this. Would be interesting to find out if any of these people have been shorting Google lately!
All I know is they seem to be able to keep porn off their site.
Well, if I was Google, I would have 1 person in charge of investigating “copyright infringement”, and refer all references about that issue to that person. Hey, if it’s their day off??? Call back tomorrow.
Seriously, there is something seriously f***ing wrong with the law today if posting a 30 second clip of a 2 hour movie in a parody video is illegal. I agree, that posting an entire movie or song on the internet should be illegal, but you should be able to use a significant amount of a work for other purposes, such as reporting, education, and parody.
Anything sold to the public should loose all copyright protection after 20 years. Move on already.
Don
Yup, Google’s stock has been talked down to just over $500 from $530 in about 1 week. Just like the last time!
