Click here to hear my plea for input. — As many of you know I’ve joined up with the folks at Podshow to organize a tech channel and do some podcasting. A lot of you have been asking for me to do more than Cranky Geeks and Twit. But what? I’m asking for user input on this and let’s give you something that you might actually want! There’s a thought.
You can add comments here, by direct email or over at the Cage Match where ideas will be closely monitored and openly discussed. Eventually this post will be moved to the Cage Match for permanent discussion.

I’m throwing my vote in for a Dvorak reality TV show
#1 is see if the folks at Podshow will produce your new show in 16×9 format. Whether you’re using Apple TV or any other means to stream video podcasts to your living room, the odds are pretty good you’re up-to-speed with widescreen.
Leo gets it done. So does Amber (well, WebNation, anyway).
Let’s start with audio since that’s what I’m talking about…a true Podcast you can listen to in your car.
I already spend enough time with DU and Geeks, my wife is getting pissed.
My vote would be to have John dissect in more detail a subject appearing on Twit – that doesn’t go into enough depth (sometimes).
IOW, John would have “carte blanche”, posting results in his forum so we can cheer him on, or heaven to betsy, disagree. 🙂
Also what annoys me is this “pod” acronym. It’s a webcast, not something that will only work on a specific piece of overpriced hardware.
#1 like the IT Crowd show, but with real people??? Real tech issues?
#2 – JCD in high-def !
John, honestly, what works best for me is to start WinAmp or iTunes, let it download in the background. Then I watch it later. Like rocketboom.
Whatever happened to TRIANGULATION?
J/P=?
Dvorak sold out to the evil empire. f that.
I was just discussing with someone how im subscribed to about 20 different tech podcasts and i end up hearing 20 different iterations of the same top tech stories. I would suggest doing a tech podcast, but not headline based. I watch/read you because i like your views on tech ‘issues’. Just my 2cents, …there are WAY too many tech podcasters that are doing the SAME DAMN thing.
I’d like to hear a short (under 10 minutes) audio commentary column, similar to what I hear on NPR that came out regularly (say twice a week). I listen to/read your stuff for the type of opinion columns in PC Magazine or the Cringely type stuff, I don’t need another source for tech news, that market is already too crowded.
Twit is always more “twitriffic” when John is on. I always enjoy John’s cynical input to all the tech news stories both on Twit and on cranky geeks. I embrace my inner cermugin. (no, I can’t spell it.)
I would listen/subscribe to the cranky one on any podcast.

“John, honestly, what works best for me is to start WinAmp or iTunes, let it download in the background. Then I watch it later. Like rocketboom. ”
Thats what I do with Geeks, download WMA then copy it to my Sansa and watch it or just listen on my walk. I do wish the polka music would go away.
I would like to hear a 5/10 minute daily analysis of one of the main stories of the day, but, with John’s particular view on it.
There is no shortage of news on the web and in podcasts even – what I need is analysis to help me understand the story behind the story.
How about an “Average Joe Geek” or “Listener Geek Supported” podcast where John picks the 3-4 people with the most insightful comments posted on his blog for the week and invites them to debate over skype. Or, similar to Ben’s NPR idea above, have people submit 10 minute rants on current news and you pick the one you like.
It’s certainly original, but would be technically/logistically difficult. It would lack a certain degree of consistency like what John and Sebastian give to cranky geeks. If people didn’t follow decorum, it could rapidly devolve into a bickering match.
You would certainly get fresh perspectives on issues, which is the best reason to try it.
Just PLEASE keep it relatively short. Cranky geeks or shorter would be the perfect length. I have enough 1:15 podcasts stacking up because I can’t find the time to listen to them (*cough* TWIT *cough*).

Keep the Polka Music… adds a touch of class!
Ok, Ok, I am Polish! But no bias here…
Not another fetish gadget show. There’s a lot of us boomers that enjoys using technology for work or play. Most really don’t care about chipsets or obscure features, and we damn well don’t want to invest in high learning curves. Digital photography and video are a few examples. At one time I was geeky about the nuts and bolts, but honestly today, I just want something that works as advertised and enjoyable to use. Look at this under-targeted demographic John, the 49+ crowd.
JCD, tried listening to your “plea”, under Vista, player wanted Quicktime, tried it, it choked. Thought you might like to know.
I think a podcast on the business side of tech would be good. Many of us are not buiness geeks but would benefit from such a podcast. Many times business decisions have a larger role on technology than technical decisions do. Business Week online tried this but I have not been happy with the result.
I’ll listen to the PodCast when you send me an iPod.
How about comparinf hardware from OLD to new…
Is it worth (doing as intell did) paying 2 to 4 times as much for a processor that only increases by 1.5 times.
Mutlti processing, and is Intells idea better then having REAL multi processors, which ARE cheaper and more configurable.
OLd tech and what has been lost/forgotten/Bypassed/screwed up.
MS/Gate history, and how Bill got away with it. and the business structure of a OS.
comparitive OS…check out how/what OS’s are doing…Compare OSX, wintell and linux and how they do their graphics and which is better/faster..
#17 – That’s so 2005 of you. It’s time to ask for an iPhone, not an iPod.
Then again, this whole thread is 2005. Podcasting is on a downtrend, and it’s time to pair down to what really matter… not make more content.
#12 – Or, similar to Ben’s NPR idea above, have people submit 10 minute rants on current news and you pick the one you like.
That’s not a bad idea… but you’ll soon discover that 10 minutes is a long time.
I’d like a longer show, I don’t think it should have any specific length, just make them as long as you want whenever you have time. Thanks a lot!
I think it might be easier to also invite some tech/CEO/analysts/lawers whatever people over on the Skype or on the Phone and post that not necessarilly regularly, maybe there would be more than one episode a day or a week sometimes.
#19 – James Hill… Master of Cool…
(Hopper… How do you make a rolling eyes emoticon?)
Seriously though… Aside from making a receiving phone calls, there is nothing I want from a phone. Why on Earth would I want an iPhone.
You know… screw it…
Bring Back Silicon Spin!
I was briefly on an episode of Silicon Spin once 🙂
JCD should add Motor and Cooking (with wine tasting) subjects to his tech news.
A simple show with one guest at the time (maybe two, but not more.) when talk would ramble over different matters, not only tech, with an obligatory Motor (cars, fast or not so fast…) and Gourmet sections.
That’s it. I would like to hear the other, not so confrontational side of JCD.
Triangulation! That or a market oriented tech show, sort of a 1/2 hour weekly show akin to what you do on CNBC from time to time. However, I guess it may be to much like listening to a Market Watch column.
24. And Killer Kittens! and motorcycles and….
Sorry, I have trouble taking things seriously…its a flaw
OFTLO – How about this:

Or this:
I would like a podcast more like sports radio format and flavor, with tech topics. Something that can showcase the Dvorak take on things but not very scripted particularly if you do interviews. The mind of Dvorak…you can donate the royalities on the name to your favorite charity.
