Paris Hilton was released from jail Thursday — nearly three weeks ahead of schedule. The move sparked an outcry from some elected officials and the City Attorney’s Office, who questioned whether Hilton was receiving preferential treatment.
“This incident with Paris Hilton is just the most recent that highlights the problems our criminal justice system has with making sure sentences stick, whether it is in a county jail or under electronic monitoring,” county Supervisor Don Knabe said. “Length of punishment belongs in the hands of our judges and when a judge imposes a sentence, that sentence needs to stick.”
Sheriff’s Department spokesman Steve Whitmore said the decision to release Hilton after just more than 72 hours of incarceration was made after “extensive consultation” with medical personnel, but he refused to elaborate.
The judge has ordered Paris Hilton returned to jail, and she was taken from court screaming.
A couple of posts here turned on a light for me. If Hilton has to go back and actually do her 45 day sentence, then hopefully someone might think twice about getting behind the wheel of a car after drinking. The publicity that NO ONE will get special treatment or even out of doing their time in jail is worthwhile.
Thank you Paris. Your jail time just might save a life.

Who actually drinks that sixth (or sixteenth) beer and sets it down and heads for their car thinking “Well, it’s getting late, guess I need to hurry up and get out there on the road and take someone’s life in a fiery crash.” For fuck’s sake, what idiocy. Alcohol blinds one to the fact that their sense are dulled.
If you make a conscious effort to drink then you should also make that conscious effort to plan how you will get home. If you are too immature to drink responsibly then you have a problem and shouldn’t be drinking.
If you insist on drinking then don’t be surprised or complain when caught. You will spend some time in the County (Paris) Hilton, lose your license for a while, and see hefty insurance premiums.
EVERYBODY HAS FAILED TO CONSIDER THE REASONING BEHIND ‘LAWS’!!!
I’m so disappointed with you all. She broke a law, sure, oooooooh — what a rule-breaker! The punishment is entirely excessive for her, you, or I. This isn’t justice, because it isn’t balanced or fair. Let the punishment fit the crime!!
She broke some statute, she blew off some LAWYER in a robe — NOBODY GOT HURT!!! Repeat: NOBODY GOT HURT!!! The punishment doesn’t fit the crime, and I believe it violates the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution of the United States.
Consider the term “Constitution”, I like this definition: “the mode in which a state or society is organized” If it was YOU who broke this rule, then does 3 to 6 weeks of confinement seem fair to you? This is the kind of shite that makes people HATE Amerika.
My gh0d, you people have so lost sight of things. That’s it, America was the last test, but their society has also failed. Time to re-start the experiment. Good luck in the Rapture!

Get a clue about how democracies work. Obviously, a majority in a legislature of elected officials thought the punishment wasn’t “excessive” or they wouldn’t have passed the law. The fact that in your personal opinion it is excessive is simply your opinion. Implying that those who disagree with you are Nazis is puerile. If you want to change the law, run for office or write your legislator.
A democratic republic is “the mode in which our state is organized” and produced that law. If you have a better “mode” why don’t you tell us all about it.
Grow-up, don’t drink and drive and spend a few minutes actually paying attention in civics class.
I was wondering when Godwin’s Law would pop it’s head in this thread. The Law of the Intertubes is still alive!

> The Jail Sheriff said most people in Paris’s situation
> would not have gotten jail time and/or would have gotten
> home release. Is he lying or what do you
> know/think/suspect????
Were those other people sentenced to 45 days? I bet not. I simply do not believe that sending someone home (house arrest) after two days is “typical” regardless of what the Sherriff says. If that were the case, there shouldn’t be an over crowding issue. The only way to really know is to analyze the outcome of everyone with a “non-violent” offense and sentenced to more than two days of jail. So that would include people charged with simple possession, non-injury DUI cases, driving on a suspended license cases and so on. I would bet that the vast majority of people sentenced to more than say ten days have to serve far more than two days in jail or doing community service.

“The fact is this girl, who might be a jerk, is in jail for what? Did she kill anyone? Did she steal? She is in for technical reasons and all you winners are gloating about it. Just peachy.” John C. Dvorak
Hmm, by that logic, Scooter Libby should get home detention too, eh?
