End times

NASA and Columbia University Earth Institute research finds that human-made greenhouse gases have brought the Earth’s climate close to critical tipping points, with potentially dangerous consequences for the planet.

From a combination of climate models, satellite data, and paleoclimate records the scientists conclude that the West Antarctic ice sheet, Arctic ice cover, and regions providing fresh water sources and species habitat are under threat from continued global warming. The research appears in the current issue of Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics.

Maybe we really are heating up the planet to a dangerous tipping point. Scientists continue to disagree on this. I’m ordering a larger air conditioner.

How about a 500 foot high wave of water traveling 500 mph heading for the US East Coast when one of these ice sheets splashes down?

  2. David Kerman says:

Way to dismiss science with an anecdote about scientists disagreeing, instead of actually doing any looking into their claims.

Pretty disgusting post. Keep up the horrible work.

  3. hhopper says:

I wasn’t “dismissing science.” I was just saying that this is a very controversial subject. Just wait and see what the rest of the comments say. And where does it say I haven’t looked into their claims? I didn’t even state an opinion on the subject.

    Lighten up.

  4. Tim Harris says:

Everybody that brings up global warming keeps on referencing these “hollywood” catastrophic catastrophes which are way beyond the scope of what is happening. The truth is, global warming is happening, and the effects are happening in front of our eyes. They will be subtle, just like “terrorism.” There will be no trigger story as the media would like.

The media and Hollywood, and Californians for that matter, need to stop using cocaine to combat this issue. Global Warming will happen whether we like it or not. There is no stopping it. The game is over. So stop pretending like humanity actually has a say in the manner.

  5. Tim Harris says:

Like humanity has any say on the issue. You silicon valley people think you can fix everything with funding and NPO support, don’t ya ?

  6. Mike says:

#3, The truth has already been decided, and if you disagree, you are a “denier.” Didn’t you get the memo?

  7. pat says:

The last time scientist agreed in was an ice age comming to kill us all. Always beware when someone says debate over get in line or get run over.

  8. OhForTheLoveOf says:

#3 – Hop… You’d probably do better if you posted a video the scientists debating 🙂

I’ll understand if you feel like punching me for saying that

  9. Miguel says:

Guys, what do you make of NASA’s administrator Michael Griffins latest remarks about global warming?

“MR. GRIFFIN: I have no doubt that global — that a trend of global warming exists. I am not sure that it is fair to say that it is a problem we must wrestle with. To assume that it is a problem is to assume that the state of earth’s climate today is the optimal climate, the best climate that we could have or ever have had and that we need to take steps to make sure that it doesn’t change. First of all, I don’t think it’s within the power of human beings to assure that the climate does not change, as millions of years of history have shown, and second of all, I guess I would ask which human beings – where and when – are to be accorded the privilege of deciding that this particular climate that we have right here today, right now is the best climate for all other human beings. I think that’s a rather arrogant position for people to take.”

WTF? Has the guy totally killed his career at NASA?

  10. KVolk says:

I like that Griffin guy a little bit more now.

  11. Iamanassholetoo says:

I tend to agree with Mr. Griffin.

    Thanks #9

  12. ECA says:

    NOW,
can we find those Scientists that TOLD congree, that this wasnt happening??
Then we can ship them to China, have them hung.

  13. bill says:

I’ve alreaady summoned a rescue ship from my homeworld… Anybody want to join me when I leave?

    bye suckers!

  14. Smith says:

I love it when Hansen’s opinion is presented as that of NASA. Then the REAL head of NASA basically says that Hansen is full of shit.

Of course, some of you will quickly point out that Griffen is nothing but a Bush shill, all the while kneeling before Your Lord and Master, The Speaker From On High, The Oracle and Seer of Earth and Its Majesty, Pope Hansen.

  15. Jägermeister says:

Don’t worry… we’re safe. Thank God for the Dutch and Greenpeace !

  16. astro4554 says:

When they will predict the weather next week with those “NEW” computer models with an accuracy of better than simple chance… Maybe then I will worry.

  17. Mark T. says:

I guess we can blame the pollution controls of the 1970’s (meant to reduce particulate air pollution and averting “global cooling” & the new global ice age that it would cause) with giving us cleaner air and, hence, global warming. Without the particulate matter in the air, the heat is now getting through and being trapped by the CO2 bogeyman.

I say we all take the catalytic converters off our cars and cure this silly global warming nonsense.

  18. joshua says:

I can’t comment……I’m laughing at the other comments to hard. Wake me when it heats up.

  19. Johnny Rollerfeet says:

    Science isn’t consensus, lab partner.

  20. hhopper says:

Jägermeister – Does that mean we’ll have four of every species?

  21. Gary Marks says:

hhopper, I’m just glad that you remembered to use the important “End Times” graphic that tells us that the situation is dire. I actually prefer that to a color-coded alert system, but I’m curious about that bear — everyone knows that bears aren’t invited to the rapture. It’s a puzzler.

  22. Greg Allen says:

Herbert Hoover’and the conservatives’ ignoring all the signs of the looming Great Depression will seem like a minor oversight compared to Bush Jr and the cons’ ignoring the looming global climate change disaster.

  23. Misanthropic Scott says:

Guys, this is real. It is also not news. This has been known for a while. As for global warming, we’ve already got 0.75 degrees celsius of it. We’re also committed, by today’s emissions, to the next 10 years. What we need to do is try to mitigate the damage to avoid catastrophe and prepare for the warming that has and will continue to occur. And, above all, hope like hell (or pray to your favorite imaginary friend in the sky if you’ve got one) that we have not already crossed the tipping point.

For anyone with enough real interest in the subject to read a full length book, I highly recommend “The Weather Makers”. It also has plenty of references to peer reviewed pubs for the skeptics.

  24. Misanthropic Scott says:

    #22 – Greg Allen,

Screw economic depression, we’re talking about global civilizational collapse.

  25. Jägermeister says:

    #20

Backup… just in case if one of them happened to be infertile. 😉

  26. TheGlobalWarmer says:

Good. It’s too damn cold most of the time anyway. Think of all the fuel we’ll save by not using our furnaces.

  27. KVolk says:

Man I am going to miss snow….

  28. ECA says:

    23,
and what would happen, and where would you PUT, about 1/4++(?) of the world population if the water raised 10 feet??
The biggest population centers, Around the world, reside on Ocean front and low level areas. Including the Missippi and Mousuri river flood plain.
Which means, that 1/2 the east coast, and the central USA will flood…

    To, the FEW of you.
Get off the political agenda, as ALl they will do, is raise the property TAX, to get the Poor to move out, and TAKE it over in a LARGE land grab.

    27.
It wont last long, as the HEAT adds, moisture to the air…As it cools during winter, you will be getting LOTS of snow, or LOTS of rain.

  30. Misanthropic Scott says:

    #28 – ECA,

Did I in any way imply that this is not a huge issue? If 1/4+ of the world’s population is displaced, you’re talking about the start of The Great Human Die Off. I don’t have a solution to this. I merely say we must do everything we can to avoid the most catastrophic effects. We must also prepare for a minimum of the IPCC report of 1 billion climate refugees by 2050. I wholeheartedly agree that this is a huge issue. It is probably the number one crisis of our time.
