LOS ANGELES–Microsoft has sold nearly 40 million copies of Windows Vista so far, Bill Gates told a crowd of hardware developers Tuesday.
That’s more than the total install base of Windows’ largest competitors, Gates quipped as he began his keynote at the Windows Hardware and Engineering Conference (WinHEC) here.
“As of last week, we’ve (sold) nearly 40 million copies,” Gates said. “That’s twice as fast as the adoption of Windows XP, the last major release we had.”
Wow, I had no idea. I guess this is accurate… from Bill
himself.
People WILL use Vista. The progression rate is like that:
20million new PCs sold every month. If you discount 10% unsatisfied users that down grade, is 18 mill per month. By the end of the year there will be 216 million vista users. in two years Microsoft will stop XP updates. in 3 years virtually everybody will use VISTA. period.
Just remember: to use Apple OSX you’ll have to buy Apple hardware. But Apple doesn’t sell for corporations like Dell or HP. Apple will always have a small market quota. And also a lot of Apple users (PC switchers mainly) will boot windows too. Linux is still not in the desktop mainstream.
Face it: VISTA will be on your screen in one years time…
#32 – “in two years Microsoft will stop XP updates.”
M$ announced the other day that they will not support XP after next January.
…even sooner…
hmmmm
the World Domination Plans are speeding…
#32 That logic won’t work in large corporations. They WILL downgrade, every time, and evaluate further investments in IT very carefully. Large corporations are no longer up to wasting money every time MS wants.
35. Laughable. And you base this on what?
Well. to help out my fellow Miguel, it’s true that every other bank around our country still uses Win2K on every terminal. Never seen a XP screen or a server 2003…
So, anecdotally at least , big corporations are a bit reluctant to change…
Anybody know what percentage of PCs out there in the user wilderness are still running Window 98? There is a huge trailing curve of users on older hardware. Whether or not M$ still supports it, XP won’t go away anytime soon. And when Dell goes back to making XP an option on new machines, you know something is not going right for Ballmer and Gates. Miguel’s comment might explain a lot about that.
“But for Vista you WOULD have to train users, it’s different enough for that to be necessary. Just think of the ‘ribbon’ in Office 07 (I know it’s not Vista per se, but you understand the idea).”
I wondered about that too. I see no training issues, the interface is essentially the same, and can be changed to look just like XP or 98 if you like. (Classic Windows) Other than for applications, there should be no training path to learn this new operating system The end user at a bank shouldnt be able to access the inner workings of the OS anyway. They should be blocked from making any managemant changes to the PC, and I am here to tell you that the management of the computer is easier to learn than, say the jump from 98 to 2000. As for Office 97, thats an app, if you dont want to upgrade, then dont. I am running Office 2000 simply because I dont need the new features in Office 2007.
Again, I wouldnt put the money into upgrading older equipment, I also wouldnt shy away from buying new systems with Vista preinstalled. I just dont see an issue.
I was an early adopter, and have Vista running on 3 machines with absolutley no problems. It has so far been a far more stable OS than XP for me.
There is a vocal group of people out there who will never be happy with anything MS does. If you can do it better, do it. Good luck.
My new Compaq came pre-“loaded” with that big pile of steaming poo from Redmond.
Vista makes absolutely NO SENSE. the Aero interface is just a huge waste of resources and more of an attempt to say “hey, we’re as shiny as the MAC OS too!” – NOT!
Too much of Vista feels and operates like a complete after thought.
Vista clearly seems stuck trying to copy Apple’s beautiful Quartz interface and Linux’s Beryl interface to point of absurdity!
My next OS WILL BE Ubuntu. Period!
