For those too young to remember him, Yogi was a legendary player and manager with the NY Yankees who, shall we say, had a way with words which he countered with, “I never said half the things I really said.” Here’s a humorous look at politics today using Yogi’s words.

The 2008 election, explained by Yogi Berra

“Slump? I ain’t in a slump … I just ain’t hitting.”

This might as well be the slogan of the fast-deflating John McCain campaign. With disappointing fundraising numbers and drooping polls, the defrocked GOP front-runner is on his way to being benched by Republican voters.

“When you come to a fork in the road, take it.”

Perhaps because of his baseball background, George W. Bush (aka “the Decider”) is a master at this. Regardless of the consequences make a decision, any decision. This is about leadership.

“Nobody goes there anymore. It’s too crowded.”

Yogi’s succinct restaurant review underscores the risks for Barack Obama if the novelty of his charismatic candidacy begins to fade. At the crest of a wave in the fall of 2003, Howard Dean was collecting major endorsements (Al Gore, unions like the SEIU) on a daily basis. The result? Many prominent Democrats decided there was no room for them in the Dean movement and migrated elsewhere.

    Dvorak,
A couple weeks ago, you wondered why no one has hired Joe Trippi from the Dean campaign. Perhaps Edwards was watching… Trippi has joined the Edwards campaign.

What does a cartoon bear know about politics? And if you want to get your political commentary from a cartoon bear, Boo-Boo would be much better choice.

  3. hhopper says:

Yogi Berra invented some of the most hilarious lines of all time. Did he stay up late at night coming up with them or did they just happen when he was being interviewed?

#2: You do know the cartoon bear’s name was a play on the ball player, don’t you?

  5. Pfkad says:

Ah, Yogi. He was one of the best bad ball hitters I can remember. I saw him put one that came in around his shoelaces deep into the upper deck. Nice to see some of his comments again. Thanks for reminding me.

Had lunch (just 4 of us, and just blind luck) with Yogi in Cooperstown when Nolan Ryan was inducted into the HOF. The conversation and torrent of illogic still baffles me to this day. The man hasn’t lost the gift of gab. What a fantastic article, thanks !!

Nice collection of Yogi Berra quotes —
    http://www.rinkworks.com/said/yogiberra.shtml

    # “This is like deja vu all over again.”

    # “You can observe a lot just by watching.”

    # “He must have made that before he died.” — Referring to a Steve McQueen movie.

    # “I want to thank you for making this day necessary.” — On Yogi Berra Appreciation Day in St. Louis in 1947.

    # “I’d find the fellow who lost it, and, if he was poor, I’d return it.” — When asked what he would do if he found a million dollars.

    # “Think! How the hell are you gonna think and hit at the same time?”

    # “You’ve got to be very careful if you don’t know where you’re going, because you might not get there.”

    He was a true master.

The same position Bush will be in by 2040.

  9. TJGeezer says:

8 – You may have a point. I never looked at it that way. Of course, Yogi’s almost-made-sense quotes came from a baseball player, not someone on a mission from God (or whoever that voice in Bush’s head is) to gain short-term political advantage and make his cronies rich. Yogi never even made war against another country once, so far as I know.

You never know what your history is going to be like until long after you’re gone.
–George w. Bush, Washington, DC, 05/05/2006
