Maybe half of the total, maybe

U.S. unloads record bust of 20 tons of cocaine | World | Reuters — Cripes you have to assume that this doesn’t put much of a dent in the supply and must then wonder exactly how many tons of coke are people using in this country. This is a problem folks.

The U.S. Coast Guard unloaded nearly 20 tons of cocaine with a retail street value of $600 million 300 million pounds into a California port on Monday following what they called the largest drug bust ever at sea.

The armed Coast Guard cutter Sherman stopped the Panamanian cargo ship Gatun about 20 miles off a Panamanian island on March 17. On Monday dozens of Coast Guard officials under heavy armed protection hauled bales of tightly wrapped packs of cocaine onto a pier at the services West Coast command centre near Oakland, California.

“It was the largest bust in U.S. history. Its the largest interdiction on the ocean,” Lt. Brock Eckel, one of the officers from the Sherman who discovered the illegal drugs, said in an interview. “It was very exciting, of course. Fifteen guys moved 20 tons of contraband in five hours, so it was very exhausting.”

I don’t think they were THAT exhausted, if you know what I mean.

The drug war is going about as well as the war on terror.

So, Robert Downey Jr.’s shipment will be delayed?

    J/P=?

  3. Scott says:

The interesting question that follows is what will this do to street prices?
Likely answer: Little or nothing. What does that say about total supply?

Stew, right, and guess who is paying for both. Good thing the USA learned something about prohibition. /sarcasm

I do not advocate drug use, but the law of ‘supply and demand’ will exist much longer than the ‘war on drugs’ (and will always win). Wish there was a simple way to end the ‘war on terror’ which has nothing to do with supply and demand. Does it?

This haul was unloaded at the Alameda docks to be shipped to Florida to be burnt.
Now, raise your hand if you believe it was actually necssary to burn this stuff in Florida and that a large chunk of it will never reach Florida.

    6,

They could have just dumped it in the ocean, but a government supply is a government supply! They’ll just get rid of what they don’t need.

    5,

Terrorism is a response to an environment. Nobody decides to kill themselves through desperate acts against an oppressor because they didn’t get the 15% bonus at the year end review and Sally the office slut wouldn’t let you get up her skirt. Usually its something along the lines of depression, severe oppression, hopeless environments… stuff like that. Especially when you perceive the oppressor is a viable target. Supply the oppression ands the demand for terrorists is through the roof!

  8. Olo Baggins of Bywater says:

7…maybe we should start sending that coke to terrorist states and get them all cracked-up. Send them lots of stuff to make meth, too. You know, take the war to their land, not ours.

  9. Named says:

    8,

Nah. They’ve already got all the heroin and opium production wrapped up nice and snug.

Back in the day, I would have volunteered to work 4 non-stop shift as a security guard watching this mountain. Glad those days are past and I lived.

  11. ME says:

Looks like somebody in the Coast Guard didnt get the CIA memo. OOOOppps!

  12. Pfkad says:

#10, Mork: With a mountain like that you could have worked a month non-stop. Or at least stayed awake.

  14. catbeller says:

Decriminalize it. Let insurance companies cancel policies of users, even tho legal. Let it flow. Let evolution then take place. There isn’t a problem with coke as much as there is an obsession with controlling people. Now let’s watch Kevin and Alex chug themselves into alcohol poisoning, which somehow is legal.

I have a novel idea, make just what they seize legal, and use that to fund the war!

    Naw, it would never work.
