Lisa Nowak

We all make mystakes, and love makes fools of us all. Capt. Nowak deserves a chance to continue to serve her country and move on in her life.

The former astronaut fired by NASA after she was charged with trying to kidnap a romantic rival will develop flight lesson plans as part of her new military assignment.

Navy Capt. Lisa Nowak will work on developing curriculum and training programs when she joins the staff of the Chief of Naval Air Training Command in Corpus Christi next month, said a Navy spokesman, Lt. Sean Robertson.

She was originally expected to report for work this week, but Robertson said Nowak will start her new job in April.

I met her personally at the Wired NextFest last October. She struck me as a very nice, if tiny, person. (Then again, I’m 6’2″.) I sincerely hope she can get over this and get on with her life. Being in the unrelenting eye of the media beast can destroy the best of us.

I’m surprised the Navy didn’t force her into early retirement with all her negative press and all.

  2. Nik says:

    1. Nope, she is being pigeon holed into a BS job so that she may scrape up whats left of her career. Us Navy folks don’t have an early retirement.

  3. KagatoAMV says:

I was thinking maybe since so much was spent on her training that they want to get some sort of return on their investment.

I would guess that she is still going to have to face trial for the whole attempted kidnapping though?

  4. Smartalix says:

    2,

Exactly. Better than winding up recreation manager at McMurdo. (Unless that’s your thing, I’ve got a buddy who works down there on occasion.)

    3,

Yup, she still has to face a Judge.

  5. JT says:

Doesn’t she have a prison term to serve first before she can get on with her life? The only question being will she serve it at the military prison at Leavenworth or a Florida state penitentiary?

  6. Angel H. Wong says:

    #5

Send her to Guantanamo, where the rest of the psychos are.

  7. busdriver says:

I went through Corpus as a Student Naval Aviator in 1994. I joined the Navy just after the infamous ‘Tailhook Scandal’ of 1991, and I saw a lot of good mens careers ruined for just being in Vegas at the time, as well as many other good mens careers stopped since then. I don’t know the details of this case, but from what I have read, this just smacks of a double standard being set.

It is too bad, and it hurts the many fine woman who are in the Military doing the right thing, and now must deal with (again) just being there because of what they are, not on their skills.

    Smartalix (off-topic),
I just got back from Vegas a few days ago, and Star Trek: The Experience was amazing, a religious-geek experience. I think it is the only place where I can say Qa’pla to a Klingon and get Qa’pla back. The Ferengi was hilarious, not to mention inspirational as he knew all 285 Rules of Acquisition, and we had a good cut-throat capitalism conversation. I took your advice on the Flaming Ribs of Tarq and they were really good, as was the booze. The Warp-Core Breach & Romulan Ale made the rides all the more entertaining, as me and my friends were staggering to keep up with the crowd during the Borg invasion. All and all it was an impressive form of entertainment, a nice break from the overwhelming presence of gambling.

  9. Smartalix says:

    8,

    Excellent!

  10. Improbus says:

Every time I am in Las Vegas I make the pilgrimage to ST:TE as well. If just to pick up something for the geeks left behind at home.

  11. Tom says:

Love is one thing, attempted kidnapping is another. This lady needs help, hopefully she gets it.

BTW, did you misspell mistake on purpose? 🙂

My advise to you is to walk away backwards while smiling… and then RUN!

She was found with had in a BB gun, steel mallet, knife and rubber tubing. Crazy Love is Crazy Love, but she was being charged with attempted murder!

Does the face on the right look sane to you!

  13. TJGeezer says:

12 – She looks ravaged in that pic. It’s the face of a person who needs meds and a whole lot more rest.

If the defense shows that photo at her trial I’m not sure it would be easy to get a conviction based on sane intent. IANAL so I don’t know if both intent and sanity are required for conviction, but the right sympathy play might go a long way toward acquittal with the right jury.

Nobody wound up hurt but her. I just feel sorry for her.

  14. Brew Kline says:

Smartalix, first you posing with Ron Jeremy and now with Capt. Nowak… who’s next?, John C. Dvorak?

  15. Jägermeister says:

Yes, some time in the sun would do her fine.

  16. James Hill says:

But… she gets to play with seamen.

  17. psychonaut says:

smartalix, this woman’s actions go well beyond foolish. surprised you’re just giving her the yellow card. lots of folks are friendly when you meet them. heck, i’m sure g.w. is a fine feller to kick back a few brews with. but as we all know, there’s more to people than their personality.

  18. Alix:
You did a complete 360 on lisa Nowak……………
I refer back to the last blog entry. Feb 2, 2007
    http://www.dvorak.org/blog/?p=9614#comments
I didn’t mind taking the picture for you, but couldn’t atleast credit me for the shot.
If you decide to censor my post then then please give me a call to discuss your actions since this wasn’t our origional agreement.

#13, I spoke with all 3 astronuts and they where all exahusted that day. I think they drove up and they had to deal with a very long line of children.

  19. Smartalix says:

    18,

Sorry about the photo credit, Rich. I often hand my camera to the nearest person to take a picture of me with someone or something, and wasn’t sure of the photo source.

As for my position, where in my comments do I say she doesn’t deserve a chance to get on with her life? I even defended her intelligence. I apologize for the missed photo credit, but don’t think you can pull some shit on me about my own comments just because you’re miffed.

  20. Miguel says:

Guys, everyone’s entitled to change their opinion on any issue. That’s the intelligent thing to do when confronted with new data that may go against your previous beliefs. The last thing we want is fundamentalism.

  21. Cheers Alix,
I didn’t know I was pulling any sh*t on you?
I’m confused why you would think I was miffed about anything?
Taking that picture isn’t my greatest achievement in life however as you know Photo credit is one of my pet peeves, Thats all it is…
When you write an article you wouldn’t want someone taking credit for your work, would you?

You passed me your camera several times however I’m sure I took said photo with my camera. Anyway I don’t have the time to check my archives and its not that important.

    PART 2
You never stated that she dosn’t deserve a chance nor did I say you said it! You did call her a “freaking astronaut crazy-ass bitch amongst other negative comments.”

    Alix you wrote this!
“Considering all the gear, don’t forget this was a freaking astronaut crazy-ass bitch. You don’t become stupid when you go crazy, you just do wack shit in a very meticulous manner. She probably has a list somewhere like Kiddo in Kill Bill.”
    “Comment by Smartalix — 2/6/2007 @ 6:08 am”

  22. Mr. Fusion says:

So what is wrong with the Navy giving her a job? She is still innocent until proven guilty. She is still in the Navy. If the Navy were to fire her then she be in for a healthy settlement. If she ends up doing time then the Navy simply gives her an unfavorable discharge unless she resigns first.

We don’t know all the facts and until we do all the gossip is just conjecture. BTW, I don’t know of any police force that releases favorable information about any accused.

  23. RTaylor says:

More than likely she’ll end up with a DD for conduct unbecoming after any conviction, since it’s a civilian charge. At the least she’ll never make another grade and will be washed out. The Navy isn’t fond of public embarrassments.

  24. I agree. No problem giving her a navy job and letting her live a productive life.
I doubt she will do any time and at the most 5 years probabtion.

  25. Smartalix says:

    20,

I guess you have trouble reading for comprehension. Again, I ask if I said anything about her not deserving a chance to get on with her life. I did call her crazy, but to help you read for comprehension, crazy does not mean stupid, a point I stressed. Yes, I did call her crazy, but I also did not condemn her and pointed out that love makes fools of us all.

  26. Alix what is your point?
And why are you so nasty?
According to your statements I feel you did a 360.

I have no problem with comprehension.
Alix you didn’t condemn her? yeah right you called her a crazy ass bitch. you called her a fool.

You stated this in the above blog entry
“She struck me as a very nice”

    Prior post you wrote
    “a freaking astronaut crazy-ass bitch.”

In addition you used the word fool and by definition
fool n. “One who is deficient in judgment, sense, or understanding. One who acts unwisely on a given occasion: I was a fool to have quit my job.”

  27. Smartalix says:

You’re making this more important than it is. So I called her crazy, it’s a “360” turn (I know what you meant, but this is an indicator of the strength of your criticism) to say she deserves a chance to get past it? You seem to want to beat this point into the ground.

Doing something foolish and getting called on it does not make a person beyond rehabilitation. If you did something stupid I may call you a fool at the time but that doesn’t mean I won’t talk to you afterwards if you take steps to move past it.

That’s all I have to say on the matter. If you still don’t get it I can’t help you.

  28. faustus says:

a little compassion from team dvork!?!?! what the… you guys ain’t going pussy on us are ya?!?!!?! actually i totally agree with the post…

  29. Grrr says:

22 – thanks. Right on the money. Give the woman a chance to get treatment, accept responsibility for her alleged crimes, and contribute.

10 – “Every time I am in Las Vegas I make the pilgrimage to”
‘In Search of the Obelisk’ at the Luxor. Closest thing to free-fall I’ve ever found…

  30. Podesta says:

I think it is important that Ms. Nowak be punished. She did actually assault someone, i.e, the spraying of the rival with a chemical. She would have done worse if the victim had not escaped. So, though I don’t wish Ms. Nowak longterm problems, she must be held accountable.
