Can he come and do this at the White House after Bush finally leaves?

Priests to purify site after Bush visit

Mayan priests will purify a sacred archaeological site to eliminate “bad spirits” after President Bush visits next week, an official with close ties to the group said Thursday.

“That a person like (Bush), with the persecution of our migrant brothers in the United States, with the wars he has provoked, is going to walk in our sacred lands, is an offense for the Mayan people and their culture,” Juan Tiney [said].

Bush’s seven-day tour of Latin America includes a stopover beginning late Sunday in Guatemala. On Monday morning he is scheduled to visit the archaeological site Iximche on the high western plateau in a region of the Central American country populated mostly by Mayans.

Tiney said the “spirit guides of the Mayan community” decided it would be necessary to cleanse the sacred site of “bad spirits” after Bush’s visit so that their ancestors could rest in peace.

  1. James says:

“He also said the rites — which entail chanting and burning incense, herbs and candles — would prepare the site for the third summit of Latin American Indians March 26-30.”

In other words, they were gonna do the cleansing anyway and decided to make a political statement while they were at it.

  2. god says:

Uh, no — the “other words” are yours.

  3. Gary Marks says:

Even the descendants from a civilization that used to practice human sacrifice are offended by Bush. Imagine how many priests it would take to banish the evil spirits if Cheney were visiting 😉

Speaking of our President and the Mayans though, the scene in Apocalypto when the Mayan leader began making human sacrifices actually did remind me very much of a modern State of the Union speech. He was talking about the problems they faced (drought & disease), but assured the crowd of people that better times were ahead. After the gods were appeased by several sacrifices, he promised the people that the state of their civilization would be strong (I’m paraphrasing).

I got a good chuckle out of the parallels, but I hope we have a better fate. What will it really take to appease the gods? Strangely, many of the gods invented by man throughout the ages have been partial to blood sacrifice. Can I get a few volunteers?

  4. herb says:

Mayan communitiy? Thought they were dead for centuries. Some idiots in Mayan disguise for the press, I presume.

  5. doug says:

#3. Ironically enough, Bush himself would vehemently disagree with religion = backwardness.

  6. AdmFubar says:

Hmmmmm I wonder how much these priests are charging for the evil spirit cleansing???

  7. Frank Baird says:

I think the war in Iraq was wrong, but this is the most ridiculous and hypocritical thing I’ve heard in a very long time. I wonder which ancestors were the most offended, the ones who performed the human sacrifices or the ones who were sacrificed. It’s hard to believe this is any other than sour grapes over the fact that the Spanish Empire collapsed and the English Empire followed. The Anglos’ crimes were no worse than those of the Spanish or the Maya or the Aztecs or the Incas. The only difference is that the English Empire was the last before the era of political correctness so they and the Americans get cast as the bad guys. What a bunch of bullocks.

  8. Pmitchell says:

and this means what to us

    some one was offended

    ok

    big deal

  9. John says:

I would hope that if I was ever drafted to be president (the only way it would happen) and I was looked upon the way Bush is, and I was planing to go somewhere that people considered sacred and it was clear they didn’t want me there by saying they would have to purify it after I left, I would have the decency to alter my plans and not go there… but then again I doubt I would ever be in that situation 1) We are not going to switch the political system from ellections to a draft anytime soon, nor is there a high likelihood I would do the things that lead Bush to be seen the way he is.

  10. Miguel says:

Maybe the priests can go north afterwards and do some cleansing in Washington? 😀

  11. Shadowbird says:

Get real, people. While Bush may not be that great of a president, he is NOT the devil incarnate. The Antichrist will become known for bringing peace, not division.

  12. Frank IBC says:

What’s interesting is that the AP article has no actual quotes from actual “mayan priests”, just a leftist spokesperson with non-hispanic surname giving hearsay.

  13. Indeed Frank. There is a crock of crap aspect to this whole story.

  14. Greg Allen says:

    >>Indeed Frank. There is a crock of crap aspect to this whole story.

Crock or not.. you have to admit, it is kind of funny.

A religion that sacrificed humans still gets a creepy vibe after Bush visits! 😉

  15. bob says:

Can he come and do this at the White House after Bush finally leaves?

Probably after he wipes up the Clinton cum stains.

  16. TJGeezer says:

Awright! – #18 bob wins the crassness award, and everybody’s gratitude for reminding us that hey, if there’s a problem, it’s Clinton’s fault. :-p

  17. Frank IBC says:

    Herb –

The ancient Mayan civilization collapsed before the Spanish conquest, but Maya people remain as the dominant indigenous group in the Yucatan region and Chiapas and Tabasco states of Mexico, in Guatemala, Belize, and portions of northern Honduras and El Salvador.

  18. noname says:

#12, Imagine a President actually being able to bring peace to the Middle East. How ironic then, the right will accuse him of being Satin; then the country will split into a civil war. So maybe your right, he wouldn’t be Satin because he didn’t bring peace after all.

I guess you really would have to be Satin to appease the Right and bring please to the Middle East all at the same time.

Excuse me, I am just so sick of the needless violence, intimidation, fear, self enrichment and bogus self righteousness the Bushes have brought this once honourable, self respecting country.

  19. Sounds The Alarm says:

Yeah – I have to agree. This one is under the bunch of crap category.

  20. Mr. Fusion says:

It might be a crap story, but I find it humorous. It is also ironic that the American religious wing nuts are not the only ones finding the need to do something pretty stupid because of some long ago dead prophet’s claim.

  21. noname says:

Ok, I am beyond nauseated reading Mr High and Mighty Fusion.

So self satisfied and bogusly self righteous. But, as you claim you are a man of science; your right, because you prove it. I guess you set the standards on that too.

What proof of your self-righteousness, or subject aclarity do you bring. Non, but that doesn’t stop you from being your own self prophet!

Ok, so you have this handle “wing nuts” you toss about like some seasoning. What moronic self-righteousness, is this self delusion??

If I haven’t said it, it’s pretty stupid your self-righteousness. You are probably one of those militantly intolerant liberals, dare I say “wing nut”

  22. Mr. Fusion says:

    #24, noname,

gee, did someone piss in your corn flakes this morning?

Ok, I am beyond nauseated reading Mr High and Mighty Fusion.

Then don’t read my posts. Simple enough

In your own self righteousness though, you might be interested that it isn’t spelled SATIN. That is a type of cloth. A very smooth cloth. So if a very smooth cloth is going to bring peace …

Your post though shows a typical wing nut attitude. Nothing specific, just venomous blather. No reason for your outrage, just saliva spraying. Nothing to back up your ranting, just your anonymous name to hide behind while you ask me what subject clarity I bring to the discussion.

Ok, so I’ll be clear, just for you, noname.

GOD, is a myth. So is Pandora, Thor, Mars, the Tooth Fairy, and Easter Bunny. There is absolutely no evidence that there is (are) any supreme being(s). Those that follow the idea that there is a supreme being, when all the evidence suggests otherwise, are fools. The term “wing nut” is slang for those who are fools. Those who believe in the wrath of the gods are wing nuts.

If you feel I am a wing nut, then that is your opinion. If you believe there is a god, then I believe you are a wing nut.

    Have a nice day.
