Those Geico “cavemen” shouldn’t be so upset after all — they may get their own television series.
ABC said Friday it had ordered a pilot for a comedy, tentatively titled “Cavemen,” that features the characters used in a series of ads by the insurance company.
The potential series, one of 14 pilots that will be produced by Touchstone Television this spring, features the cavemen as they “struggle with prejudice on a daily basis as they strive to live the lives of normal thirty-somethings in 2007 Atlanta.”
I’d probably give it a watch. I wonder if they’ll use whatsis name in a cameo?
Does every story have to have a bush-bashing angle? The caveman sitcom story was funny enough; I’d probably even watch it. I like those caveman guys. The forced insertion of the political angle was unecessary.
I hate to admit it, but I’ll probably watch it. I find those commercials hilarious. Mostly because they don’t have anything to do with auto insurance.
More Bush-bashing please. We’re stuck with the destructive, venal, incompetent idiot for two more years, and the damage he’s done to the country will outlast all of us.
If he could be recalled, he would, in a heartbeat. But…laughing at him is all we can do. And there’s plenty to laugh at, and even more to cry about, unfortunately.
Just another reason not to watch network TV. Probably one of the stupidest concepts for a TV show.
4. “Probably one of the stupidest concepts for a TV show.”
Hardly, what about “My Mother the Car”?!
#1 – No… Every story does not need a Bush Bashing angle… But then again, what’s not to bash?
I remember a TV show about a talking horse. I think his name was Mr. Ed. Sounds like a stupid concept for a TV show to me.
I like those cavemen. A show like that should give the CapitalOne credit card barbarians a regular drop-in part too.
It’s just “Third Rock from the Sun” viewed in a fun house mirror. Fish out of water stuff. Could be harmless, might be funny.
The caveman commercials are the only reason I watch teevee.
If they do it right, could be a successful show because of the “element of truth” to all humor. Even us middle aged white guys have experienced prejudice (or doled it out) at some level at one time or another.
4. I seem to remember comedies about both the Korean War (MASH) and Nazi concentration camps (Hogan’s Heroes). Can you get stupider than that?! Oh yeah, how about a comedy about a blatantly racist white guy (All in the Family) and a blatantly racist black guy (Jeffersons). How about a show with a multimillionaire playboy who fights crime with a young boy while wearing tights (Batman)?!
I personally think this caveman show is pretty far from being the “stupidest.” Stupid yes. Stupidest no.
Putting all of this into context, Monty Python’s Flying Circus was certainly stupid, but it was also hilarious.
#8, 9: Gotta agree that the Geico cavemen commercials are funny, and they have potential as a Third Rock kind of show, but less over the top.
#7: Incidentally, Mr Ed might have been a stupid show from our current view, but it was really popular at the time. Beverly Hillbillies, Petticoat Junction and Green Acres were popular too, and were just as cornpone.
I can’t stand any of the Geico commercials. I once went into a Geico office to check out car insurance. Some middle aged obese woman tossed a stack of papers across the counter and said, “here fill these out”. Well I WALKED out and will never deal with them again.
The caveman commercials are particularly disgusting so I won’t be watching any lame ass pilot episode.
12. “The caveman commercials are particularly disgusting…”
Wow, I’ve been watching the wrong channels. The Geico comericals I’ve seen were funny. I’ve yet to see any of the disgusting ones. Maybe I can find them on YouTube.
8. ““Third Rock from the Sun” viewed in a fun house mirror. Fish out of water stuff. “
11. “they have potential as a Third Rock kind of show”
But the cavemen are not fish out of water. They are completely normal in everything they do except they look like cavemen. They are articulate, they have fine taste, they have developed motor skills, they’re educated and highly intelligent.
The humor does not come from their differences, there are none other than appearance, but in the utter absurdity in people’s treatment of them.
Plus, they are good actors! I think its to Geicos’ credit that they use some originality and humour in their commercials. Most commercials are un-watchable, these are clever. Their rates ARE too high though, guess they have to pay those cavemen above minimum.
Sounds like a great premise for a show. Yes, a Bush cameo could be done: they’re sitting around the firepit in their home (which resembles a cave on the inside), watching TV – GDub says something about “WMDs in Iraq”, and one of the cavedudes says, “What an idiot.”
Also, an update: it will be interesting to see if cavefolk become extinct, since their continuing assault on the environment, and each other, doesn’t seem to be panning out…
At least they weren’t suckered in by religion, like the Cro Magnon were.
I’m with #12, I think the Geiko commercials are totally retarded. (sorry if I offended Bush there)
BUT, Mr. Ed, My Mother the Car, Beverly Hillbillies, Third Rock From the Sun, Gilligan’s Island, and the like were all funny, entertaining, and light comedies.
A cave man comedy? I guess we’ll have to see it before I pass judgement.
I seem to remember comedies about both the Korean War (MASH) and Nazi concentration camps (Hogan’s Heroes). Can you get stupider than that?
How about a short lived series “On The Rocks” about prisoners in a minimum security prison?
Yes, there really was such a series.
