A guy goes into a bar with a liberal on his head…

The problem is it’s hard to be funny when you have to employ doublethink just to shave in the morning. You can only stretch welfare queen jokes so far.

We’ve read the rumors about “The 1/2 Hour News Hour,” Fox’s so-called response to the liberal-leaning “Daily Show,” and the network has even leaked the above clip (which, despite a few clever lines, is a far cry from the bulls-eye skewering of its Comedy Central precursor or the immaculate delivery of SNL’s classic Weekend Updates).

Now, four days before the premiere, TV Guide’s Stephen Battaglio provides show creators Joel Surnow and Manny Coto (also known as the executive producers of Fox megahit “24”) with a chance to wax eloquent about their new forum for the chasm that is right-wing comedy.

It won’t die unless it completely stinks on ice, as the Right has the money to keep it afloat indefinitely unless it is hooted off of the stage.

  1. Angel H. Wong says:

But poking fun at tree hugging, pot smoking, vegetarian liberals is sooo used up to the point it’s boring.

  2. Pmitchell says:

here is a link to the promo trailer

I think it looks kinda funny my self

  3. malren says:

It’s been leaked in full in various places. And it stinks on ice. It’s just horribly unfunny. Gutfield’s bit is much better.

  4. GregA says:

I encourage everyone to watch this show. Nay, this show should be considered mandatory viewing. You are doing yourself a disservice if you dont at least watch once…

  5. OhForTheLoveOf says:

That thing on YouTube looked horrible… It wasn’t funny… Cindy Shehan’s shooting spree? We’ll invade your country and convert you?

So… We have more compassionate… smarter… and soon to be proven, funnier… This is shaping up to be a year for liberalism.

  6. joshua says:

I liked the Obama bit, and I happen to like Obama, even if I think he’s not ready for prime time just yet.
It might get a lot better, if they can find some really good writers.

  7. slappy says:

It will be a quick death.

  8. TJGeezer says:

The trouble with finding humorists for the radical right (the mislabeled “conservatives” who want to upend the Constitution) is exactly what Smartalix says – it’s all based on doublethink already.

Plus most of the easy pass-for-humor niches seem to be filled. Rush has a patent on sneer-and-smear, O’Reilly owns the righteous posturing bit, Michael “Savage” Weiner and Ann (really a girl?) Coulter have unreasoning loony extremism sewed up, the pedophile and hypocritical closet gay roles seem owned by Congressional Republicans and Homeland Security execs. And as Angel says, they’ve ridden their schticks right into the ground. There’s really not that much left for a right-wing humorist, if that’s not a contradiction in terms, to work with.

Left-leaning humorists, on the other hand – I mean, did someone REALLY nominate Rush Limbaugh for the Nobel Peace Prize? http://tinyurl.com/2dp3p4

Really. How’s a poor mislabeled “conservative” humorist supposed to compete with that?

  9. Jonathan Preston says:

    Bad bad bad….

  10. OhForTheLoveOf says:

    #8 – TJGeezer – Nice analysis… You OWN this thread 🙂

  11. kballweg says:

Maybe hurting the majority for the minority to get rich isn’t funny. What then?

  12. Mr. Fusion says:

Face it, right wingers just can’t tell jokes. There used to be a well known right wing comedian named, ummm, Dennis something. I wonder what ever happened to him. Anyway, he wasn’t funny either.

Now Rush Limbaugh, he can be a funny guy. He is so natural, it is almost as if he believes it !!! O’Reilly can’t pull it off, he just doesn’t fit the image. Coulter? Drag Queens don’t make me laugh, especially the ugly ones. Glenn Beck laughs too much at his own jokes.

  13. ivanthewonderful says:

that was poor. cheap jokes, second-rate actors, muddy production. and the laughter is artificial (even if it’s real).

cheers to smartalix for saying that this kind of humor is just tit-for-tat.

  14. GregA says:

Hey don’t harsh on Limbaugh too much. Because of him i learned a new racist pejorative this week.

  15. Michael Hawthorne says:

It can’t possibly be as bad as Air America. Franken and co truly sucked.

  16. WTL says:

What a clever name for a show.

This Hour Has 22 Minutes [Wikipedia article].

  17. Lauren the Ghoti says:

But… but… I thought the right wing already had their own comedy channel… What else is Faux News?

  18. ECA says:

OK, put these 2 words together, and DONT laugh…

    conservative Humour…..

Ummm, is this like a catholic trying not to do Ethnic, Political, Biased, or religious jokes??
    Whats left??

  19. MikeN says:

I think King of the Hill will be the better conservative comedy show. Even the Simpsons will probably be better in that regard.(“It runs on solar power!”)

The funnier show was probably back when Rush Limbaugh still had a TV show and got higher ratings than Letterman.

  20. MikeN says:

I don’t see this show doing that well. It’s closer to SNL than The Daily Show. They need to ditch the laugh track. It wouldn’t surprise me if more liberals ended up watching this show than conservatives, just like the Daily Show and SNL.

  21. That canned laughter is the worst part of the whole thing… whoever was pre-taping the laughter should have told the guy in the front row not to laugh… the nasally sounding guy? I swear every time they tell a dumb joke you hear him go “HER HER HER HER HER!”

  22. Sounds The Alarm says:

Hold it – you mean Bill O’Reilly has been serious all this time?

    Holy Shit!

  23. jccalhoun says:

The problem is that by labeling yourself as “conservative comedy” you are limiting your targets. While the Daily Show may be mainly liberal, that doesn’t mean they can’t take a shot at Hillary or Obama if they think it is funny. Would this conservative comedy show take a pass on making fun of Cheney shooting someone? I have my doubts.

  24. RuralRob says:

Why don’t they just bring back Wally George? He was funny!

  25. venom monger says:

There used to be a well known right wing comedian named, ummm, Dennis something. I wonder what ever happened to him. Anyway, he wasn’t funny either.

I think he was funny back when he more politically agnostic. He made no bones about making a conscious turn to the right after 9/11, and although I think he was still funny at first, over time he just got more and more boring and predictable until it killed his career, or at least put the brakes on. Sort of like when Ellen Degeneris went through that period where she just wouldn’t shut up about the lesbian thing.

  26. OhForTheLoveOf says:

#22 — SEE! I told you he was dangerous!

  27. TheGlobalWarmer says:

It’ll never fly – too much competition out there from the Liberals themselves. Take a Pelosi, Clinton, Gore, Dean, Boxer, Franken, or whoever: Everything that comes out of their mouths causes uncontrollable hysterical laughing in the listener. ( You cry later when you realize what it’s all going to cost you.)

  28. Tom 2 says:

Oh man this is going to be incredibly awful, i mean honestly conservatives dont need a show to be funny, they are already as hilarious as they are going to get, I mean just the same ol stupid shite over and over again, and whats up with the name(the half hour show?) couldnt have they come out with something better than that? Maybe the fascists funny show, at least they are getting to the point.

  29. James Hill says:

Look at all the libs who can’t tell they’re a joke, and have been for some time.

You’re owned by the vast right wing conspiracy, accept it libts.

  30. James Hill says:

Look at all the libs who can’t tell they’re a joke, and have been for some time.

You’re owned by the vast right wing conspiracy, accept it libs.
