What? Us worry?

Seems that Google has decided that a particular user has banned an entire user account for inappropriate content.

Gisburne is a self-described atheist with, at least from the one video, a deep questioning of Muslim claims about the Koran. To express his doubts about Islam being a religion of peace, Gisburne created a 10-minute video, entitled “Islamic Teachings” that was nothing but violent quotations taken from the Koran instructing followers to kill nonbelievers and speed their way to Hell where Allah will torture them forever.

Has Islam become such a sensitive issue that GooTube are tip-toeing around the topic entirely and just deleting any possible offense? Interestingly, Gisburne has posted Anti-Christian videos with no issues…

  1. Mac Guy says:

It’s a hot topic, and it’s no shocker that someone at YouTube clenched the colon when the video came across their desk. However, according to YouTube’s Community Guidelines…

“We encourage free speech and defend everyone’s right to express unpopular points of view. But we don’t permit hate speech which contains slurs or the malicious use of stereotypes intended to attack or demean a particular gender, sexual orientation, race, religion, or nationality.”

Whether or not this truly is hate speech is up for debate, but seeing as how the videos are no longer available, I can’t make the call.

  2. Lauren the Ghoti says:

And really, what is this “policy” except more PC run amok?

This is utter, despicable cowardice. Between fundie religionist morons and “tolerant” PC airheads who help them instead of joining together in condemning and wiping out irrationality – which we’re gonna have to do if civilization is to survive – with those two clueless groups dominating the dialogue, there’s little to look forward to…

Appeasing the troglodyte bullies of the world only gives them encouragement, so thanks, guys, for being the enablers of those who would destroy everything Western Civ stands for in the name of their idiotic peasant superstition.

  3. A_B says:

Assuming that the video wasn’t hate speech, which it doesn’t sound like it was, the irony here is that the message of the video was reinforced by the fact that YouTube took it down.

YouTube was so scared about a backlash, that they took aggressive steps to remove material that did not violate their TOS.

I’m not saying the point of the video is correct, but the removal of the video indicates that YouTube is scared of something.

  4. GregA says:

Well there was that thing with that book a few years ago. Then those guys in Iraq who were hitting them selves in the head with their swords after they were… liberated. Then with the riots over the cartoon a few months ago.

I would say something bad about Islam, but I don’t want them to kill me.

  5. Kamatari Honjou says:

Freedom of Speech isn’t free, it costs a $1.05

    Or so I have heard.

  6. malren says:

The problem as I see it is larger than this false free speech argument. Free speech does not apply as YouTube is not the government.

The real problem is that YouTube is pushing a political agenda by allowing massive amounts of videos attacking Christianity in terms that range from thoughtful dissections of the inherent contradictions in Christian religions to scathing, hateful attacks on people just for believing. When someone posts *anything* about Islam, up to and including simple news clips of Muslim terrorists, if YouTube sees it they yank it.

I think that, regardless of our differences, we can all agree that upwards of 90% of Americans who would side against Christianity but defend Islam (including radical Islam) don’t lean right, politically speaking. The majority of the people pulled off YouTube have been well-knows right-leaning American bloggers, they just couldn’t get press like this guy.

That’s the reality of YouTube. The level playing field, the web 2.0 miracle, the video-democracy-for-the-people experiment? It’s anything but.

  7. TVAddict says:

I watched the video and all I can say is that a number of the cited quotations sound like biblical scriptures. It seems to me there can be no peace as long as people identify themselves with either belief system. There has to be a better way to handle interactions with so-called non-believers.

  8. Gig says:

They seem to be handing out a lot of copies of Doom. I wonder it iD knows about this?

BTW… nickgisburne must read a lot faster than I do. I haven’t had to hit the pause button that much since the last Paris Hilton video.

  9. Angel H. Wong says:

It’s YouTube, where semi nude chicks with wet T-shirts making out are okay but don’t you dare put a guy in a speedo or you’ll be kicked out.

  10. Mr. Fusion says:

#7, malren, there you go throwing crap again.

90% of Americans who side against Christianity yet defend Islam are probably Muslims. If you think there has been a conspiracy against right wing bloggers then maybe you could post some evidence. Surely your right wing friends must have compiled a list of discriminated posters.

#9, I agree. I gave up after a minute as I can’t read that fast. If there is a message here, it has more to do with the inability of the film maker to make a film that appeals to people other then speed readers.

  11. Version 1.0 – Judaism
    Version 2.0 – Christianity
    Version 3.0 – Islam

    Still buggy… 😛

  12. JToso says:

    Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

  13. Marz says:

I haven’t gone through each of the quotes, but the ones I did in many cases are at best a generalization of the the actual passage. At worst, a very twisted version. Many are slanted summaries of the original passage. Find a copy of the Koran online and compare the passages yourself.
