Merkel supports EC’s demand for CO2 emission cuts – China View – German car manufacturers for quite some time were opposed to reducing CO2 emission levels, but now there seems to be a reversal on their position from the proposal by the European Commission, reducing CO2 levels to 130 grams of CO2 per every kilometer by 2012.

Germany, Europe’s largest car manufacturer, would support the European Commission (EC)’s demands for a cut in carbon dioxide emissions, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said here on Tuesday.
“Germany is going to have to accept compromises which won’t be easy for us,” Merkel told a plenary session of the European Parliament.
Last month, the executive office of the EU said Europe must cut greenhouse gas emissions by at least 20 percent below the 1990 levels by 2020 in order to limit global warming and prevent serious damage caused by climate change.

Why do I have the suspicion that this will not be enough. It has snowed in London only twice so far this winter. I has been quite warn here and the rest of Europe.

Too funny. First, under Herr Schroeder, Germany decides to get rid of its Nuc power plants and replace them with… And where does Schroeder work now? Germany doesn’t know which way is up.

  2. Gig says:

The fact that snow this year is up or down in London is hardly an indicator of global warming. I noticed last night on local weather the the record high for that date for the location was 83 and that was in 1933. The record low was -15. That was in 1934.

Snowfall and temp vary year to year and have not a thing to do with Global Warming. So feel free to re-post your comment when London has gone 20 or 30 years with reduced snowfall.

  3. Typical misunderstanding of the global warming:

“Why do I have the suspicion that this will not be enough. It has snowed in London only twice so far this winter. I has been quite warn here and the rest of Europe.”

Temperatures will change just in fraction of degree per year due to the GW and the weather in general is chaotic. We have had sub-zero (C) or single-digits and teens (F) temperatures in NY for weeks now. And 12 ft/4m of snow. Florida citrus crop is devastated by freezing… Is the “global freezing” coming ? No. All these are local climate effects (and likely more from El Nino than anything else). All these “ah, its so warm” are just local variations that allways existed. You cant “feel” GW.

You will detect global warming (from whereever it arrives, my bet is from the Sun) in the form of uncharacteristicallyu strong storms at unlikely times/places. Evidence of more energy stored in the atmosphere. Example of real warming effects was the recent cyclon that drove through the middle of Europe. That will happen more.

Lowering CO2 emissions will actually help much more on another polution track: chemical imballance. CO2 in amounts that we dump arround alters the chemistry of water in particular. And affects the life there… Much more important than the popular warming issue.

The real positive aspect of this decision is not mentioned in the artticle. To get emmissions lower new technologies and changing concepts of what we need from the cars will need to appear. You can’t just “filter out” CO2 ad-infinitum. Read between the lines: smaller engines, hybrids and Hydrogen power,… they are coming. Good.

What a stupid fucking conclusion after an almost interesting article.

    Also, welcome to Dvorak Uncensored.

  5. moss says:

What eventually might result from all this is standards — European, North American and Asian — that match. Then, vehicle manufacturers can simplify intake and exhaust systems, computer control systems.

    Excepting California, of course.

  6. TheGlobalWarmer says:

With any luck, a new study will come out soon and create “consensus” that it’s already far too late and no matter what we do, we’re all going to fry.

  7. @$tr0Gh0$t says:

#6, there have been quite a few strange wheather happenings in England lately, with 200 MPH winds and tornados forming in London. Last year a study was published indicating that global warming is in fact happening, with records of temperature changes going back 300 years.
