While doing some research from 1893 I ran into this interesting advertisement which immediately reminded me of the scene in the Woody Allen movie, Sleeper, where he is told in some distant future that Chocolate was a health food and everyone in the 20th century has it wrong. I think chocolate as a morning breakfast drink has peaked. But if so, it is obviously due to poor marketing. People look for any excuse to consume chocolate.

Chocolate is at least as nutritious as McDonald’s beef

  2. I’m very curious to know what you were researching from 1893? Was it the “A World’s Fair Mystery” game that google pops up?

By the way, we have about a one inch sheet of ice over here on the east coast and my layout designer and her boyfriend are stranded at my place since we print Thursday. I hope you are having fun in California!

  3. paco says:

I think that in “Sleeper” it was smoking tobacco what was considered healthy in that distant future!

    3. “I think that in “Sleeper” it was smoking tobacco what was considered healthy in that distant future!”

    You’re both right.

I’m assuming that the breakfast cocoa was not sweetened with sugar. It says “pure,” but then again in the 1800s it’s not like there were any truth in packaging laws.

However, if it was pure, it certainly would not have tasted very good. I’m imagining a very bitter morning. However, the natural caffeine in the cocoa would probably have given you a jolt.

What I don’t get is why they compare it to “beef juice.” Was beef juice once a breakfast drink?

  5. Dale says:

Just yesterday I was listening to the radio at work and some expert was on, advocating the healthful benefits of chocolate. Basically, the more cocoa powder, the more rich the chocolate is in antioxidants, making it better for your heart, etc. etc.

I hear this “news” at least once a year and it always conveniently comes right around Valentine’s Day.

  6. Scott Gant says:

From the ad: “Eminent Physicians have proclaimed that the pure extract of the cocoa bean is as nutritious as beef juice”.

That’s pretty funny. Never knew they held “beef juice”…whatever that is…in such high esteem.

  7. Smartalix says:

Reading the term “Beef Juice” made me think of Upson Sinclair’s “THe Jungle”. They used to use everything but the scream from the animal. We still do today, but have a better way to conceal the by-products in foodstuff now.

  8. Tim Bonham says:

Well, chocolate is made from a bean.

So it counts as a vegetable.

Heck, that’ll make it east to get the recommended daily servings of fruits and vegetables!

  9. TheGlobalWarmer says:

Who needs an excuse to eat chocolate? Mmmmm.

Beef juice is what you get if you toss a steak into a juicer. (I’ve always wanted to see someone do that on HSN.)

  10. Creek Critter says:

Well, I hate to break it to you, but dark chocolate *is* healthy for you in moderation. It contains antioxidants and helps to lower blood pressure.

  11. Angel H. Wong says:

Everytime I hear “beef juice” all I can think of is giving a BJ.

  12. Greg Allen says:

I just read a history of dieting, and it is fascinating that these things come around. Like low carb or low fat or high protein or vegetarianism … and even fad diets like grapefruit.

So, I googled it. — here is one article claiming dark chocolate is good for the heart!

More support for dark chocolate’s heart benefits.

It’s printed at “Confectionery News” so take it with a pinch of sugar!

Are we ready for an all-chocolate diet?

One of the earliest dieting aids was vinegar. I wonder if that will come back?

  13. Cupid says:

    Valentine’s Day bummer…

My girlfriend is allergic to chocolate and flowers. Chocolate gives her migraines, and flowers give her labored breathing.

Do you think it’s just a ploy to get jewelry? She doesn’t seem to be allergic to gold or diamonds…

  14. Angel..stop it!

I have a son who gets migraines from chocolate…

Beef juice..ever heard of bouillon? What do you think that is? A fancy marketing name for beef juice.’

    Kids!
