These roses smell green

Fretting that a failure to deliver a Valentine’s Day homage to your sweetheart will turn your relationship toxic? Relax. In fact, perhaps the most damaging thing you can do is send the obligatory bouquet of red roses.

In Latin American countries such as Ecuador and Colombia– two of the largest exporters of cut flowers to North America — large quantities of pesticides and herbicides are typically used during flower cultivation, affecting the environment as well as the health of the flower farmers and greenhouse workers.

Biohazardous cut flowers are not the only token of love being turned on its ear in these environmentally correct times: Chocolate made from cocoa beans harvested by children and “blood diamonds” from war-torn regions have also fallen out of favour.

I like this post Uncle Dave! A dear subject to our family. Even our coffee is bought Fair Trade.

Give a Fair Trade product – show her you care about Globalization.

However, as in my case, renovating the kitchen – by recycling nearly everything, and just changing the doors and counter tops (only going to cost 800$) is going to go a long way.

The next best thing to flowers – an exotic plant – as they breathe in your room’s CO2 and will recycle your room’s pollutants.

I personally prefer cash for Valentine’s Day.

No.2 At last an honest woman. You can buy roses w/o pesticides google organic roses.

  4. JT says:

Isn’t the first thing a woman does after she receives a dozen roses is sniff them? I can just imagine the unsafe amounts of pesticides and herbicides being inhaled into her lungs. For some men this might be a blessing!

*snort* As if the american rose growers don’t use them.

I’m for anything that harms Globalization, but much of this complaining is done by what people that already have this kind of stuff. Most of the poor people in America, you know those that make less than $40,000 and aren’t a minority, legal or illegal, that can get our government’s forced income redistribution, won’t really care. Just like the individuals that shop at Wal-Mart don’t care about undermining this country. Why should they our elite and rich don’t care, they just look for more ways to export jobs and import uneducated poor. It really is a farce to have the Democrats insisting on continued education while pushing for immigration. The Neo-Coms are much better.

  7. Mark Derail says:

Traaxx, who says Fair Trade products are for everyone?

If you’re making less than 40k with a family, first of all you’re probably making a more honest living than all those making 400k+.

So I can fully relate to a family using Walmart to clothe their kids to school, the alternative being the Salvation Army.

When you consider how commercial holidays have become, like growing rozes in huges quantities in time for Valentines,
    or,
huge quantities of turkeys in time for Thanksgiving,

the people with not-so-thin wallets should at least buy smartly.

I salute someone of a full-generation older than me, Uncle Dave, to at least post this type of story and comment on it.

Traaxx, last I saw, families weren’t having 10 kids, so immigration is a necessity. As to which regime is better, we have 6,000 years of documented history to relate to, the last 150 being quite spectacular.
I don’t a single society type as being better than another.

  8. Mr. Fusion says:

#5, very good point Angel. Though I think almost all of the Valentine roses are imported.

Oh teh nooooeeeeessss!!! Dont tell the Belgians!!

seriously people, if something has to be shipped to a place (and thats about 90% of the things you purchase), its going to destroy the environment or someone’s health by doing so. So what? Ekeing out an existence as a hunter-gatherer isn’t what I had in mind when I landed on Planet Earth.

  10. Best test for a new wife is if she will be thrifty – be not taken in by the hype and allow you to purchase the flowers a day after the rush.
With your savings you can even buy yourself a copy of vista.
