The State | 02/06/2007 | Astronaut arrested on battery charges — I mean doesn’t NASA screen people for instability? Gak!

A NASA astronaut is being held without bail after police say she attacked her rival for another astronaut’s attention at Orlando International Airport on Monday.

Lisa Marie Nowak drove more than 12 hours from Texas to meet the 1 a.m. flight of a younger woman who had also been seeing the astronaut Nowak pined for, according to Orlando police.

Nowak — who was a mission specialist on a Discovery launch last summer — was wearing a trench coat and wig and had a knife, BB pistol, and latex gloves in her car, reports show. They also found diapers, which Nowak said she used so she wouldn’t have to stop on the 1,000-mile drive.

Aren’t there fraternization rules? Geez.

Well if it was kotex it would explain everything.
The story was on TV this evening
    She was wearing astronaut’s diapers.

    All Joking aside,
Both Smart Alix and I meet her at NextFest.
She came across as very nice person.

I photographed Alix and her together.

Her Actions don’t fit her profile.

I’m sure the media spun this way out of proportion.

I think she just wanted to have it out with this person perhaps scare her a bit.
The worst she did was pepper spray her in a public place.
if she had any intent to do her harm she would have had a real gun and used it.
This case will prove to be bogus.
I doubt she will do any jail time.

Sorry, old boy, but in the immortal words of Bela Lugosi, ‘I beg to differ.’

“I’m sure the media spun this way out of proportion.”

Not so. In point of fact, they simply reported the things she actually did and said. Pls explain where any “spin” comes in.

“Both Smart Alix and I meet her at NextFest.
She came across as very nice person.”

So? I once met Ted Bundy. He also “came across” as a “nice person.”

“Her Actions don’t fit her profile.”

“Profile”? I wasn’t aware you had access to her psych records. I thought you simply read the few facts reported by the media.

So you contend that her actions would appear to be inconsistent with the impression you have of her character?

The same thing can be said and has been said since the dawn of time when people do absurd and / or horrid things. “Oh, but he always seemed to be such a nice man. He baked cookie for the neighborhood kids every Xmas. (therefore:) He couldn’t possibly have killed and buried those 15 people they found in his basement.” Your (or anyone else not a psych professional) subjective impression of someone at a public event, a couple of minutes with someone who is wearing their ‘public face’ is utterly without value in assessing a person’s character. Your naîvete surprises me.

    “She was wearing astronaut’s diapers.”

Yes? She was. They;re worn in orbit, where the time-honored methods of human elimination are not possible. She was not in orbit. As ‘Noam Sane’ said, quite rightly, “How long does it take to stop and pee?”

No, no one in their right mind is going to tool down the road sitting in their own piss, no insult intended to the makers of what are no doubt perfectly fine diapers. Only someone who has no choice – such as one on board the Shuttle – or someone in the grip of a pathological obsession would be willing to do this.

What was “spun”? She didn’t drive from Houston to Orlando? She didn’t wear the disguise she was caught with? She didn’t pepper-spray her “rival”? Maybe it was Binaca? The BB pistol? Maybe she wanted to get in some plinking in O-town.

Pls don’t use the conveniently abusable word ‘spin’ in a case like this unless you can indicate what you think was spun and why.

You apparently don’t know much about the human mind, Rich. The worst she managed to get away with was to ‘pepper spray her in a public place,’ leaving aside the point that a long-term parking lot at 3AM is definitely stretching the definition of “public place” well past it’s limit.

Had she succeeded in getting into the other girl’s car, there is no way to say where it could have led – and history shows us that this kind of behavior often leads to major tragedy.

I personally know a “nice, pleasant” lawyer from here in Houston, she lived next door. Smart, good-looking, nicely spoken, great sense of humor. In fact I rescued a cat and her litter from terrible conditions and this girl took them in and has cared for them every bit as well as I would.

But I opened the paper one morning to find that she was in jail for flying to Richmond in disguise (as her sister) and gunning down her ex. Made the national news. Google “Piper Rountree.”

Having extensive personal knowledge of this case and some of the people involved, I was in a position to witness any “spin” that the big bad MSM might put on the case. They didn’t. If anything, they went out of their way to give her the benefit of the doubt.

And I have no reason to believe that they did anything different in this case. Quite probably, there are even more details of bizarre behavior from this whacked-out bitch that won’t come out until trial.

As I noted, Houston is chock-full of this sort of female insanity, moreso than any other places I have lived – which number quite a few.

You really need to get a more realistic idea of what people are actually capable of and not egocentrically think that your brief subjective nonprofessional impression is more accurate than the facts of the matter reported in the media.

If she had murdered the other girl, you might’ve been surprised; I wouldn’t.

    Its ok to differ!
Sorry old boy, hehee. Seems like you are attempting a stab at me rather than the issue.
I’m not sure why your attacking me personally over this discussion.
I do know something about the human mind and a persons character since my minor was in it.

Did you really meet Ted Bundy? Thats interesting.

The spin comes in starting with the pictures they used.

Granted the woman traveled 20 hours to meet with this woman and she was in rage and probably didn’t want to stop and be seen.
So she wore diapers. While its odd for us to wear diapers this was part of her training.

I personally rather pull over to the side and drain the the monster.
I’m sure all she had to do was a quick squat.

After 20 hours on the road then being questioned by the police you will say and sign anything to get it over with.
I doubt she was thinking clearly when she was captured

So she sprayed her with pepper spray, big deal
If she wanted to kill her she would have shot her in the face with a real gun and left.
    She didn’t have a gun!
    She didn’t use a gun!
    She didn’t use a knife!
She didn’t need to enter the car!

By pulling into a public place such as an airport proves she didn’t carefully pre-meditate a murder.

However we do not know at this time if here full intent was to murder her. In addition we are all innocent until proven guilty.

My gut feeling is it was an argument that went bad. it was blown out of proportion because she traveled 20 hours and put on a disguises
I’m sure she had to wear a disguise because she would have been kicked out of the program is she was caught.

I really don’t need access to her psych records
The woman had top government clearance and was screened by top psychs not me. They don’t typically send emotional instable people to the moon on a daily basis while it would be nice

They found items in car that they are associating with the crime However we have all sorts of items in a car rope, knifes, screw drivers, and tape.

  13. Lauren the Ghoti says:

    Rich –

As to any claims on your part of possessing any nontrivial degree of insight into human behavior and motivations, your assertions so far fail to lend any support to them, and in point of fact indicate the opposite.

    – – – – – –

“The spin comes in starting with the pictures they used.”

Is that so? Orange County provided those pictures. Booking photos, also known as ‘mug shots’ are commonly used to accompany news stories featuring newsworthy arrests. Standard, time-honored newspaper practice.

Word on the street is that OC cancelled their contract with Glamour Shots to do photo shoots of people arrested for crimes there…

Anyway, if you would allege that ‘spin’ is operative here, it would be easier to take such a claim seriously if you were to mention just who (reporter? editor? publisher?) is behind your alleged ‘spin’, and what ideology, political or otherwise, would be a motive for wanting to make her look bad? Who has it in for her, and why? Absent plausible answers to those all-important questions, your charge of ‘spin’ is without merit.

“I doubt she was thinking clearly when she was captured”

As if she was thinking clearly up til then. Riiiiiiiight.
BTW, she wasn’t being hunted, so she wasn’t captured; she was apprehended. Failure to recognize such distinctions is one reliable indicator of poorly developed critical thinking skills.

    – – – – – –

I was gonna go on, but after realizing that your response there is such a drawn-out mish-mash of illogic and non sequiturs, I think I’ll just give it, and you, a pass. Not worth the effortt.

    So What’s your point?
You dissecting every word I used attacking me personally behind a pen name.

“”American Astronaut Arrested on Battery Charges — Psycho Chick?””

I simply stated that the worst she did was spray maze in her face and I don’t feel she intended to murder her.

    #47 – Richard Brill

    “So What’s your point?
You dissecting every word I used attacking me personally behind a pen name.”

I find it hard to believe that an adult can ask such a question. That’s my opinion.

    (a) “Dissecting every word”? How else would I demonstrate where the flaws in your argument lie? Do you even understand what the point of discussion and debate is? When you express an opinion, you are offering it up for possibly being agreed with or being disagreed with. When someone disagrees, they should, by courtesy and custom, explain why they disagree. To do this, they analyze your argument to whatever degree of detail they choose, and attempt to show where you made errors of fact or errors in reasoning.

I disagree with you. To do so without pointing out where I disagree and why – that’s pointless. That’s not what discussion is about.

And what are you on about, with this ‘pen name’ nonsense? If you’re unaware that many – or most – people on the Net who participate in discussion forums use a handle instead of their own full, real-life name, then you can only be new to the Net or very naïve about the dangers of using your real-world identity in public. If you want to take those risks, fine by me. But by implying that there is anything dishonest, or not aboveboard about using an alias online, you falsely impugn the motives of many millions of Net users who don’t care to take chances with personal information that can be misused.

“I simply stated that the worst she did was spray maze in her face and I don’t feel she intended to murder her.”

That’s your take? Fine. I disagreed. And, playing by the rules, I explained, in excruciating detail (as that is my personal style), why I disagreed.

If you’re unwilling – or unprepared – to defend your public statements, then you shouldn’t make them. Feel free to chip in with your two cents; but it’s the same for everyone, you included – if you say silly or insupportable things, you’re gonna get called out on it. That’s how it works, no point in bitching.

Point is, I back up my statements, the same as anyone is expected to back up theirs. If you’re not prepared to defend assertions you make in public, then why make them?

Abnormal psychology is something I coincidentally happen to know maybe one or two things about, and I have many years of professional and personal observation and analysis to draw upon. I know of far too many instances of the identical behavior pattern exhibited by Ms. Nowak that have resulted in murder and mayhem, attempted and accomplished. Those are the grounds for my disagreeing with you. Instead of acting all hurt, you’re supposed to either offer evidence that supports your opinion or refutes mine – or concede where you have erred. That is called discussion, also known as debate.

If you’re unwilling to change your mind if you should be proven wrong – or, if you’re not interested in or capable of demonstrating to others that you are correct when you believe the facts support you – then there’s really no point in even entering the discussion, is there?
