Carefree Mayor, Tampa. Woo hoo!

Tampabay: Police jail rape victim for two days — This is a disgusting story. This is the kind of a-holes you have in parts of the Bible belt. They should be so proud of themselves.

First, police say, a 21-year-old woman was raped at Gasparilla. Then, she was handcuffed and jailed – for two nights and two days.

A jail worker with religious objections blocked her from ingesting a morning-after pill to prevent pregnancy, her attorney says, keeping her from taking the required second dose for more than 24 hours longer than recommended.

The Hillsborough Sheriffs Office wouldn’t talk about her medical treatment in jail. But Tampa police are investigating why more compassion wasn’t shown toward the woman after she reported her sexual assault to law enforcement.

In a Libertarian society she wouldn’t have gone to jail in the first place. A deal with creditors could have been worked out in exchange for labor to the party that she owes money.

How would such a deal be enforced? – and what does that have to do with an argument that private prisons, being run for profit not to rehablitate prisoners or keep society safe, wil inherently deliver inferior services, buck for buck, than a government body?

My personal feeling is that the libertarians are dead-on about issues that are so beloved by authoritarians – Prohibition II, private behaviros, and so forth. WTF is the government doing involved in such things in the first place?

But this is here and now, and what is, is. Mr. Fusions argument, if I read it rightly, that government laws leading to imprisonment of people by governmental authority have no business being administered by private companies run for profit – nothing you said is even relevant. How you can call him “Con Fusion” (yuk yuk) is beyond me. Sheesh.

By the way, part of the “for profit” mode involve paying employees as little as possible, minimizing training costs, etc. It’s hardly surprising they wound up with an idiot in a position of power over others and not a clue about the responsibility that goes with such power.

The deal would work on a voluntary basis. Nothing would be “enforced”. Say she doesn’t want to give her labor to the party that she owes money. In the society that I would like to see, businesses and other private organizations would function through a reputation level system. It could even be built in into credit cards. If you constantly do foolish things, then a private peace officer can stop you and scan your card while putting a negative reputation score on it. Any business or person can request this reputation number before deciding if this person is worth their time. I bet you people would behave much better knowing their national reputation is at stake.

  3. Geoffrey Knobl says:

If this isn’t apocrypha then these police should be put up on charges of rape themselves.

Why not. It’s equivalent to what they did.

I’m really starting to hate conservative. I should just say irreligious extremists. They are evil people.
