JFK airport

 

The area certainly needs it, and with Newark serving the west, JFK in the east, and La Guardia in the (relative) center, the north is a good choice for the fourth hub.

A small suburban airport was on track to take off as transportation officials prepared to expand it into the New York metropolitan area’s fourth major air travel hub.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has struck a $78.5 million deal for a 93-year lease on Stewart International Airport in Newburgh, Chairman Anthony Coscia said. The airport is about 60 miles north of New York City.

Ultimately, the Port Authority aims to make Stewart a significant player in the region’s air travel, easing pressure on busy LaGuardia, John F. Kennedy International and Newark Liberty International airports. Together, they handled more than 100 million passengers last year, and that total is projected to reach 150 million by 2025. Already, the three airports regularly rate among the country’s most-delayed.

I just wonder how it will change the local communities when the airport shifts into overdrive with the resulting peripheral traffic. What about regional roads?

    Its a smart move and would give people in the Albany/Saratoga/Troy area upstate a better option to catch more flights.

    I wonder how the expansion would fit in with Stewart ANG Base next door housing all of those lovely C-5’s and C130’s.

    The Newburgh area is already growing like crazy. All this means is that property values and cost of living will go up yet again.

    Since they’re going to have to build something anyway, how about a bullet train to get passengers to the Apple in 15 minutes? Or maglev? Or a gyroscopically-stabilized one-rail train? This is a tech blog, after all.

    Decades ago, the US Chess Federation relocated to Newburgh, partly to cut down on labor costs. More recently, they moved to Tennessee, partly for the same reason. I wonder if they’re cursing having sold their land in Newburgh?

    The New York Throughway goes right through Newburgh, and the NYC facilities lack physical space to expand. I would have thought Teterboro would have been a better choice for expansion, but on reflection I doubt it has the real estate available for expansion, besides being the major general aviation hub for the area.

    I grew up in that area and everytime I return I am shocked by the growth. Traffic is already a problem. They’ve built up the main strip of big name stores, but the smaller regional roads are the biggest problem. This is a very old part of the country with many old houses built close to the roads. Traffic is going to be a major PITA. Maybe as part of the expansion they will make an airport road straight to a new thruway exit.

    #1: Albany already has an airport (http://www.albanyairport.com).

    Stewart is already served by several major airlines (http://www.stewartintlairport.com/airlines.html). Independence Air used to fly there (I flew into Stewart on them), but they are no long around, unfortunately. I don’t know what changes by the Port Authority saying it’s now the fourth major airport for the NYC area. People in that area obviously use the airport now.
