New details [have] emerged about clashes on Saturday in the Shiite holy city of Karbala, which left five Americans dead. Lt. Col. Scott R. Bleichwehl, an American military spokesman, said the gunmen who stormed the provincial governor’s office during a meeting between American and local officials were wearing what appeared to be American military uniforms in an effort to impersonate U.S. soldiers.
The tactic isn’t new. Any student of military history recalls Germans doing this in the counterattack that became the Battle of the Bulge in WW2
This was the regular weekly meeting on security, btw.
Bleichwehl declined to provide further details about the Karbala attackers, emphasizing that the attack was still being investigated. But Iraqi officials said the gunmen disguised their intent with uniforms, American flak jackets, guns and a convoy of at least seven GMC sport utility vehicles, which are usually used by American officials in Iraq.
Karbala’s provincial governor, Akeel al-Khazaali, said at a news conference that the local police at a checkpoint on the city’s edge waved the vehicles through because they believed the convoy held important Americans. At other checkpoints, the police said, the vehicles sped through without stopping.
You should understand that this kind of behavior by American military forces wouldn’t be unusual. The security regs are not supposed to “hinder” Americans.
The sport utility vehicles also held clues of the attackers’ elaborate efforts to pass as American. One had a sign on its back window warning drivers to stay back, in English and Arabic, the authorities said, a close copy of those used on some official American vehicles. They also said a bag of civilian American clothing, guns and body armor had been found in the vehicles.
Iraqi soldiers interviewed on CNN were asked why they didn’t jump into action and help the US soldiers. Essentially, they said they figured it was just Americans killing Americans.
Sag,
That’s hilarious, thanks!
The American military’s greatest weakness is underestimating the shrewdness of our enemy. These are sophisticated college educated fighters who’ve studied engineering and military history. The U.S. military by contrast is increasingly putting high tech weaponry in the hands of third world immigrants who are less educated than the third world fighting forces they’re placed up against.
Just another reason to nuke Tehran, so we dont’ have to go through all of this again.
Isn’t it great when liberal logic and conservative common sense come together?
wow. those guys have some great intel. a few weeks ago(or was months, I forget) they raided a ministry building and took 20 or people hostage. the kicker is that witnesses said the attackers had the new style security forces uniforms.
#4 — try for something more than a non sequitur. And imitating Glenn Beck never works outside of John Wayne movies.
Black SUV…. Trojan horse… it’s a pretty old tactic. Interesting that it still works so well.
Dear James Hill,
I’m sorry, but our relationship just isn’t going to work out. I want a divorce.
With much regret, Reality!
#8, That is so sad. I thought reality left James Hill long ago.
How anyone can make light of the death of American soldiers is beyond me. James, get a life.
From the CNN article: When asked why Iraqi police did not intervene to stop the gunmen from fleeing, al-Mishawi said “they assumed it was American-on-American violence and wanted to stay out of it.”
Either this was some sort of setup or the Iraqis are just so used to violence that they don’t think anything about gang land style exchanges.
What I hear most critics of the Iraq war say is, “Should America be policing a sectarian conflict?”
But I think even this overstates our role. … we aren’t even as relevant as police.
Mostly, we’re just another militia.
