Our sysop Marc Perkel writes this note:

I was at the Golden Gate Computer Society last night. Someone pointed out that since Vista is coming out installed on laptops in the next few weeks that retailers are deeply discounting hardware right now and it’s a very good time to buy laptops. They said that CompUSA is selling for $8 over cost just to clear inventory.

Good to know.

I’ll take one with a dual core CPU. Thanks!

  2. Sundog says:

Just be sure its capable for the Vista upgrade. Some of these systems will definitely not qualify. Upgrading your hardware will be financially painful after the fact. Unless, that is, you dont care about the upgrade, personally, I dont.

  3. Is this going to happen any time soon? I see no proof of this as of yet.

  4. Mark Derail says:

My sister picked up at FutureShop a Toshiba core-duo 1 gig ram 15″ screen for 1055$ Can.

I call that cheap, and it will run Vista SP1 fine in a year from now. I predict Vista SP1 for August 2008, and it will “fix” XP drivers to run in Vista.

  5. FRAGaLOT says:

I don’t CARE about Vista.. it’s been a big disappointment with RC2. If the imminent release of Vista is causing slightly old hardware to drop in price. YAY!!!! Hope people can post links here to deals..

  6. Mark Derail says:

FRAGaLOT, as a gamer I guarantee you will upgrade to Vista, just not this year.

If you want to know why, why, it’s because you’ll have no choice, Microsoft will control 100% of the PC gaming market in 2008 and all new games will be forced to work in Vista only – simply with Direct X 10.

Just a matter of time….meanwhile, Vista sucks big time. I find it worse than when XP first came out.

  7. Jeff says:

If a person has a Xbox360 and a Wii, why do they need a PC for playing games? I do not care about World of War Cruft (or whatever it is called). I don’t like RPG or “little” fantasy games. I mainly play FPS and sport games. Games to be are a quick release in a stressful life. There is no way that I would have the time to waste playing these games (Warcraft). Just a waste of time (nothing productive comes out of it).

The second problem is that PC gaming leads to endless upgrade cycles. This is both a cost and a time burden. Why waste resources when consoles can do the same thing and with superior graphics. For $399 you can either have a good video card or an entire console…geez I wonder which one I am taking.

This could be a boon to those of us who run Linux, and generally regard Windows as a cancer.

  9. Angel H. Wong says:

My advise is buy enough to fill a container and resell them south of the border for a large amount of money.

  10. BHK says:

I was just on the BestBuy site. They only have one or two models left on the closeouts list.

  11. Dallas says:

I just might get one with a Core 2 Duo! I hope Vista will deliver. I don’t some stink’n Linux on my laptop – I actually want to run something I can buy at the store 🙂

  12. jason says:

#8, please inform #11 that we are happily running the free open version of all the software he went to the store and paid money for. The only exception is gaming, I have to give you that. After spending about three grand on a gaming rig and hacking Vista untill is won’t hog your graphix card you can play all the same games I’m playing on my $300 xbox 360.

  13. John says:

any laptop being sold today, should handle vista just fine people. Sure you might need to add a bit more ram from some of the low end systems to make it nice (need to to do that with xp as well) my 3.5 year old laptop, with exception to the fancy graphics, can run vista just fine, it was mid-range then, and I bet any laptop sold today from the major players can out perform it, and thus handle vista just fine. some low end systems might not handle the fancy graphics, but vista will still run just fine

  14. Matthew says:

Does anyone know how to make vista look like XP?

  15. TomC says:

#12 highlights a potential big win for Microsoft and Vista. All this talk of potential Vista performance, compatibility and stability issues may force serious PC gamers to change platforms… to where? I’m not thinking PS3 here and the Wii appeals to a different type of computer gaming audience. So, Microsoft encourages (or is willing to give up) the PC gamers to migrate from Microsoft Vista to the lower cost platform Microsoft X Box 360 (with similar per cost games of course).

On the expectation of the current generation running Microsoft Office comfortably for a couple of years what’s going to drive the requirement to upgrade the PC/laptop? Playing DVDs I guess. Ah, I see it all now and it’s a beautiful Vista 😉

Actually, medium/long term software support issues aside this all means that buying a bargain XP based system (and moving the gaming onto another platform) seems like a good idea.. just make it Vista compatible in case I’m wrong!

Does anyone know how to make vista look like XP?

Shave its ass and make it walk backwards.

  17. Mark says:

    16. Yes, in display properties you can change the desktop to look like WindowsXP if you like. Very easy to do and uses less resources.

  18. Mr. Fusion says:

    Who the eff cares anyway???

I have yet to read anything about how Vista is better then XP to warrant the upgrade. With SP2, XP is now pretty stable, has drivers for almost everything out there, and works with most programs. Sure can’t say the same for Vista.

  19. Mark says:

    18.Who the eff cares anyway???

Those of us who make our living doing this. Love it or hate it, we have to learn it.
