A Muslim woman police officer has sparked a new debate by refusing to shake hands with Britain’s most senior police chief for religious reasons.
The incident happened at a passing-out parade where Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair was inspecting a line-up of 200 recruits.
In addition to refusing a traditional congratulatory handshake from Sir Ian, the WPC – who wore a traditional Muslim hijab headscarf – also declined to be photographed with him as she did not want the picture used for ‘propaganda purposes’.
The woman had earlier insisted that it was contrary to her religious teaching for her to touch a man.Now The Mail on Sunday has learned that her gesture has sparked top-level discussions at Scotland Yard.Some officers argue that her attitude towards men might impede her ability to detain offenders…
The incident is the latest in a series of ‘political correctness’ and race-related rows under Sir Ian’s {Ian Blair] command at the Met.
In June 2005 Sir Ian was judged to have ‘hung out to dry’ three white detectives – who were accused of rudely mispronouncing “Shi’ites’ – to prove his anti-racist credentials.
An employment tribunal said that while he was deputy commissioner in charge of discipline and diversity he had prejudiced disciplinary proceedings against the men because he wanted to make an example of them.

If I go to a muslim country I expect to abide by the laws and cultural traditions found there.
i.e if I go to Saudi
I do not expect to drink booze,
I expect to honour the spirit of fasting during Ramadan by not being seen to eat and drink infront of those who can’t.

If this woman is prepared to enjoy the freedoms the UK gives her – she can drive, she can vote, she is not property, then she should also bloody well show some respect and shake the hand of one of the people who contribute to the society she is a part of & benefits from.
She seems to be picking and choosing which planks of Islam to stand on and I find that inherently hypocritical.
Just give her a desk job. She’ll have to get off that non-contact problem if she wants to do field work.
Just wondering, how do you become a police man without passing training ? I figured they would at least be required to pass training that includes some physical contact.
Firing her would undoubtedly result in a lawsuit as John says, and would be too good for her anyway. I think the only answer is for her to “mysteriously disappear”. Preferably, into the Thames or the North Sea.

Well, she does say she can have contact, just not shake hands with or kiss men. That seems like a very strange rule to me, but it doesn’t seem like it’d be much of a hinderance. She’s not going to be shaking hands with the perps she’s arresting, and one would hope she’s not kissing them.

Talk about confusing. Is Sir Dumfuk mad about the handshake brushoff because it trumped an Anglo-Muslim photo op? Was he being PC when he “hung out 3 detectives”? Or does he just hate bad pronunciations more than Harry Callahan hates school bus hi-jackers? I don’t understand why she decided to become a cop in the first place. Police work has mostly male co-workers, and male “customers”. Using that some logic, she can’t work in the medical field either.
Sorry to see that the UK taxpayers were screwed out of the expense of training a cop who is worthless as tits on a bull. Somewhere in the UK some cop hopeful with potential was denied a slot at the training academy because her sorry ass was there instead.

If it were true there’d be some verifiable information. Like the name of this mythical PC. Of course the story’s crap, and if they named her while repeating this nonsense they’d be opening themselves up for six-figure libel damages under the take-no-prisoners UK defamation laws. So, no name in the story.

On top of that, since all UK coppers go to the same police academy, what exactly the head of only one local force would be doing at the graduation isn’t specified in the Mail’s work of fiction. Perhaps every new PC shakes hands with all 20-odd Chief Constables in the UK? Or perhaps this is just another good reason to suspect it’s all a bunch of shit?

I read this story in the London Times yesterday and I felt like it had more holes than a piece of swiss cheese. I didn’t know the original story came from the Daily Mail or I would have shrugged it off like a story from Slate or Klos.
There is no way on Earth this woman could have gone through training without violating her religious laws…..period. So either the story is BS or the woman is looking for a way to sue.
Sir Ian Blair is probably less qualified for his position than Micheal Brown was for FEMA…..He is a PC(not the PC of cop, but politically correct), ass kissing sycophant. And as of last year, a known liar and phony. If this man brought a case to trial and I was the sitting magistrate, I would throw the case out, because if he said the party was guilty, then they HAVE to be innocent.

As for me, I don’t think she should be a cop — a regular street cop, anyway.
I, myself, am a Christian pacifist and I think it is perfectly understandable that I would be denied a job as a cop. My religious beliefs are incompatible with a job that might involve shooting people — so be it. It’s the price of my convictions.
I think every major religion has some tenets or dress codes that would disqualify people for some jobs. Those naked Hindu holy men come to mind!
