BBC NEWS | Americas | Venezuela democratic, says Chavez — Can you believe this guy?

Venezuela’s left-wing President Hugo Chavez has said his country is “fully democratic”, a day after MPs granted him sweeping powers to rule by decree.

Chavez with Carter. Cripes.

  1. John Paradox says:

    Hmmm MP’s = Congress
granted him sweeping powers to rule by decree.

    We’re spreading Democracy![TM](C)(R)

    J/P=?

  2. ECA says:

    ??
But whats to vote on, and can ANYONE vote wor it?

  3. woodie says:

Isn’t it a shame that other countries don’t exactly follow American definitions, obey our political requirements and — worst of all — vote in heads of state and parliamentary representatives that think their history and goals require something other than a mirror of the Godly USofA.

And they even use voting machines that produce verifiable receipts. What will they do next to turn away from our leadership?

  4. ew01 says:

These reports quite get it eactly right. Important things to keep in mind is:

    1) these powers are pretty limited, and
    2) past Venezuelan presidents have excercized the same authority–it’s protected in their constitution.

  5. Rodrigo says:

    to # 3:

“Lula is one of the best backers mini me has in the region, going as far as saying that is OK that mini me wants indefinitively re-election and that he sees nothing wrong with the imminent shut down by taking away their license of one of our private network TV stations.”

Well, I live in Brazil and I never heard of this as of now. Can you post a link confirming that it isn’t just a product of your imagination?

  6. Rodrigo says:

The situation in Venezuela is a interesting case of study for democracy… After all, he was elected, was he not? And twice. The venezuelan people elected a guy that has tried to overthrown the government before, and has clearly the intencion to stay forever in power.

His speeches and actions are not very democratic (even if he says it is), but can we really dispute that it is the will of the people? I don’t know how to answer this.

  7. Timbo says:

Reminds me of when the Bundestag disbanded itself at the request of Adolph Hitler. There is no difference between the far left and the far right.
It reminds me of Jerry Pournelle’s political axes:

The libertarians took it to the next level by making a political quiz for grading yourself:

As for Jimmy Carter, he doesn’t represent real Christians.

  8. gquaglia says:

After all, he was elected, was he not? And twice

Your kidding right? You really think he was legitimately elected. He took power by force, do you really think he would risk losing power by something as trivial as a election.

  9. Allen McDonald, El Galloviejo® says:

Well, yeah, we sure wouldn’t want to like Cuba, now would we ? –

‘ The Cuban government usually pays for air fare and other costs, as well as the surgeries. Since the program began in July 2004 with a group of poor Venezuelan patients, Cuban doctors have performed eye surgery, mostly for cataracts, on 375,619 patients, Rios Torres said. ‘

  10. Rodrigo says:

#11, he tried to take the power by force and didn’t succeed. Check your facts.

  11. Oil of Dog says:

    real Christians.

    An oxymoron?

  12. tallwookie says:

Considering that Chavez is the best thing to happen to Venezuela in DECADES, i am not suprised he was given so much power – and americans dont like this cuz he as more power than Bush? rofl

  13. mxpwr03 says:

The people of Venezuela don’t seem to be “rolf”ing.
