Isn’t this drawing attention to yourself in Berlin? How does that represent “modesty?”

Bavarian Constitutional Court Upholds Headscarf Ban | Germany | Deutsche Welle | 15.01.2007 — The use of headscarves in Germany is a political hot potato. While the idea is supposedly to keep people from looking at you it seems to actually draw attention to you in certain cultures. So how does this de facto “showing off” represent modesty? I’ve never heard an explanation.

A few months ago, Ekin Deligöz, an ethnic Turk and member of the Green party in the German parliament, was placed under police protection after receiving death threats because she called on Moslem women to take off their headscarves. The affair triggered an outcry among the German population with many people wondering just how prepared Muslims really are to integrate and also accept criticism.

What if you’re not a Muslim and it’s a very sunny day?

  2. tallwookie says:

What if you’re a neo-nazi skinhead, but are trying to blend in?

  3. Oil Of Dog says:

Doo rags…Yamakas…Nun’s headdress…Amish whatever… Crips…Bloods Feel free to jump in!!

  4. Named says:

It’s modesty before God, not nationstates…

Hell, in my Christian church (Orthodox) women must wear a headscarf in the Church. Well, you don’t HAVE to, but it’s considered proper to wear one. Modesty before God. Since women’s hair is part of their attraction, that’s the logic (logic and religion – ERROR) behind it all.

I always thought that the strength of a democracy was protecting the weakest members of society and not emboldening the strongest / populous.

    Don’t forget Jewish Orthodox women…
For thousands of Orthodox Jewish women, one of the most fundamental practices of daily life is adhering to the code of modesty that prohibits a public display of their own hair after marriage. Some of these women prefer to cover their heads with scarves, hats, snoods, etc., however, as a matter of fashion and a desire to blend in, most of them choose to wear wigs. When a wig is worn by a Jewish woman for religious reasons, it is called a “sheitel” or “shaitel” (pronounced shayt’l).

But I guess Germany can’t tell the Jews what to wear / not wear any more…

  5. Mr. Fusion says:

The article makes it sound like it is a sole anti-Muslim law. Christian and Jewish women are allowed to display their symbols, yet Muslims aren’t? Sounds like pure legislated discrimination

I believe God doesn’t care what you wear and you may be as stupid as you wish. God is too busy figuring out how he will do the next Big Bang to worry about how humble you are.

  6. Mr. Happy says:

That could come in handy when you have to wax the car.

  7. Named says:

    5,

God didn’t write the rules, men did. Almost every single rule in Judaism and Islam are directly related to societal events in the past. Christianity tried to change it (actually, it was the hippy JC that tried). Unfortunately, the Church figured out that God is in your heart thing didn’t fill the coffers effectively… hence, the Book of Revelations!

    Trick or Treat!

#1…Smartalix….That had me thinking as well. My Grandmother would be in a CIA prison if she was alive today, she always wore a headscarf.
I do however have a problem with the burhqa, it is a total cover and isn’t a required part of Muslim dress.

  10. Darnell Jackson Washington Hill says:

As a proud black man I must say that looks a little too much like a KKK sheet.

  11. Smartalix says:

    10,

I agree. The Burqa is a completely different animal that should be treated as a mask.

  12. OhForTheLoveOf says:

#9 – I’m glad that a modern Adonis such as yourself would be generous enough to charitably spend time with a butterface…

  13. osama says:

    Durka durka burka durka!!!

  14. Named says:

    11,

As a proud black man, shouldn’t you respect her garb since Malcolm X was a muslim? Or are you a proud black-white man?

And before you get all hot and bothered… Dr. King wasn’t an anti-muslim either…

  15. LisaM says:

I think what you miss is that modesty in their case is the opposite of vanity – the vanity of thinking that the female human body should be on display for all to see. They try to be discreet in that way. Showing off that they were “proud to be Muslim” by wearing certain colours, or a badge or something (and I include the Burka, since it seems to be a local to one area pride kind of thing) – that would be “immodest” in the sense you mean. Lots of women want to be modest in the sense of not showing off what they got, saving it for special people or special times – if it draws your attention because it’s different, it’s not immodest, it’s just different. I suppose all black minority people should spray paint their skin for you so they won’t look like they’re showing off being different? Yikes. Open up your mind a little.

Does bald women need to cover their head?

  17. anti says:

    “Dr. King wasn’t an anti-muslim either…”

I tend to be anti- whoever is vowing to destroy me and my country. So if that makes me anti-muslim, so be it.

  18. tallwookie says:

    ROFL!!!

    Good response JCD

  19. Mike Novick says:

So if you can convince some women to go naked, then you are being immodest if you don’t yourself go naked.

  20. Named says:

    22,

No. Covering Classic Nudes is an American invention.

  21. Mike Novick says:

What is the history of these head scarves and burkas? One of them or something along those lines was invented by Iran in the 70s.
