This could be big here in Vegas where they just outlawed smoking in non-casino bars and restaurants.

Walgreen selling cigarette in a hand gel across U.S.

A new hand gel is starting to appear on drug-store shelves promising more than just an end to germs or dry skin — this one claims to satisfy users’ tobacco cravings for up to four hours.

Walgreen Co., the largest U.S. drugstore chain by sales, is now stocking its more than 5,500 stores with packets of Nicogel, a quick-evaporating gel made with tobacco extracts. The roll-out should be finished within a couple weeks, said company spokeswoman Carol Hively in an e-mail, adding that it costs $5.99 for box of 10 doses.

Nicogel, made by a unit of privately held Blue Whale Worldwide Inc., can be used when smoking is inconvenient, such as at work, on an airplane, in a theater or, these days, in almost any other public place.

I predict the next thing with nicotine added: condoms. Then you won’t have to wait until after to smoke.

thats messed up – wonder how long it’ll take somone to coat their entire body in it and.. i dunno, light himself on fire and streak through town or sumthin

  2. tallwookie says:

this is really off topic, buts looks sweet – http://www.physorg.com/news87663676.html

  3. Mike says:

Funny how THC is made illegal, yet apparently few people care if the local CVS will soon be selling nicotine drops.

  4. James Hill says:

Dave, when I was in Vegas last week I saw a story where the new ban isn’t getting enforced. Is that true, and if so is it still going on?

  5. Mac Guy says:

Considering I work in a school district where you have to go across the street to smoke, I might take this up (depending on whether or not the gel smells like ass).

Uncle Dave, if you could invent that condom, you’d be a millionaire. Even if it only sells as well (and as long) as Clear Pepsi, you’d still be making a buttload of $. Think of all the idiots (namely, me) who would try it to see if it worked!

  6. Brenden says:

This gives new meaning to the phrase second hand smoke.

  7. Uncle Dave says:

#4: NV voters approved a ban of smoking in bars & restaurants which are not in casinos, plus a few other places. A group of business owners sued over constitutionality. A judge here has allowed the law to go into effect, but without criminal penalties. The result is right now, health officials and police can issue $100 citations to individuals (not businesses), but aren’t enforcing it in case the law is found unconstitutional. As for the rest of the state, they are pretty much waiting until something happens here with the judge. In short, confusion reigns. I don’t smoke so I haven’t followed this much.

  8. JohnMo says:

I’ve seen a story recently about how a man who was using a testosterone cream had caused some hormonal issues in his prepubescent children due to entirely appropriate, non-sexual, physical contact. So now I guess we can have stories about getting other people hooked on nicotine via a handshake.

  9. Childish Personal Attacker says:

Suppose the guy is a real jerk off and has to take Mr. Happy out for a “smoke.”

  10. Jägermeister says:

Uncle Dave… the condom idea might not be far fetched… Get the patent before someone else does. 😉

  11. Jägermeister says:

    #10

Forget about the link… Anyway… go for the patent.

    The Health Benefits of Nicotine:

The primary therapeutic use of nicotine is in treating nicotine dependence in order to eliminate smoking with its risks to health. Controlled levels of nicotine are given to patients through gums, dermal patches, or nasal sprays in an effort to wean them off of their dependence.

Studies suggest that smokers require less frequent repeated revascularization after percutaneous coronary intervention. Risk of ulcerative colitis has been frequently shown to be reduced by smokers on a dose-dependent basis; the effect is eliminated if the individual stops smoking. Smoking also appears to interfere with development of Kaposi’s sarcoma, breast cancer among women carrying the very high risk BRCA gene, preeclampsia, and atopic disorders such as allergic asthma. A plausible mechanism of action in these cases may be nicotine acting as an anti-inflammatory agent, and interfering with the inflammation-related disease process.

With regard to neurological diseases, a large body of evidence suggests that the risks of Parkinson’s disease or Alzheimer’s disease might be twice as high for non-smokers than for smokers. Many such papers regarding Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s Disease have been published. A plausible mechanism of action in these cases may be the effect of nicotine, a cholinergic stimulant, in decreasing the levels of acetylcholine in the smoker’s brain; Parkinson’s disease occurs when the effect of dopamine is less than that of acetylcholine.

Recent studies have indicated that nicotine can be used to help adults suffering from autosomal dominant frontal lobe epilepsy. The same areas that cause seizures in that form of epilepsy are also responsible for processing nicotine in the brain.

Nicotine and its metabolites are being researched for the treatment of a number of disorders, including ADHD and Parkinson’s Disease.

The therapeutic use of nicotine as a means of appetite-control and to promote weight loss is anecdotally supported by many ex-smokers who claim to put on weight after quitting. However studies of nicotine in mice suggests it may play a role in weight-loss that is independent of appetite. And studies involving the elderly suggest that nicotine affects not only weight loss, but also prevents some weight gain

#7 – What threw myself and my wife for a loop was that the casino areas of resorts (Caesars Palace, for example) allowed smoking, but the shopping areas did not.

  14. Jay says:

I’m a former smoker who’s happily addicted to nicotine gum, and have been for several years – with the blessing of my physician. It generally tastes pretty good (you learn to like it, believe me!) and with drugstore generics on the market, reasonably cheap.

  15. Uncle Dave says:

#13: That was a specific part of the law that casinos were excluded. There was another proposition on the ballot about that, but it got defeated.

  16. Mr. Fusion says:

#14, When I quit smoking I also used the gum. To me it tasted like shit. (ask James Hill, he can explain that better then I*) I equated the taste to eating an ashtray.

*From an earlier post on another topic. Keep smiling James.

  17. joshua says:

Well Uncle Dave….if your doing the sex right in the first place, you should already be smokin without the nicotine condoms….or so I’m told…… 🙂

  18. jcq says:

how long does this gel stay on your hands, does it wash off easily, will it transfer to the baby or the food or will i have to wear gloves all day?
