An American flag plastered on the first steel column for the Freedom Tower at ground zero was removed Wednesday after the builders realized the stars and stripes were on the wrong side.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey removed the decal on the 31-foot column after the media questioned the display, with the 50 stars on the right side instead of the left.
“When it’s laying down, it’s correct,” said Bill Dolphin, 73, of Ocala, Florida. “When it gets lifted up into the air, the blue field should be on the other side.”
Federal flag code requires that, whether displayed horizontally or vertically, the blue field displaying 50 stars is always on the left side to the viewer.
The replacement decal was put in place, yesterday morning.
I suppose this sort of incident is important to many — nation, ethnicity, religion, Stone Age genes still switched on and requiring conformity.

There is one exception to this rule. Military combat uniforms have flags with the field on the right so the flag appears to be waving in the soldier’s direction of movement.
So, if the patch is on the LH upper arm, the blue is on the left? And on the front of the dude’s helmet?
I’m glad someone finally upheld the flag rules. It’s sickening how commercialized the US flag has become and used in an obscene amount of misuse.
The proper ways of hanging and caring for a flag should be taught in school.
Why does there need to be an American flag on this column at all? It was our flag waving American arrogance that brought us to ground zero in the first place! This is on par with some stupid redneck plastering a Confederate flag on their bumper. I think it would behoove America to lie low with the nationalistic fervor for awhile. So far it’s only seemed to make us enemies.
Yeah you Americans, how DARE you be patriotic! Don’t you know that’s only for others? How DARE you!
