A woman with two wombs has given birth to three children in what is believed to the first case of its kind, a hospital official said Friday.

Hannah Kersey, 23, gave birth to three girls in September, said Richard Dottle, a spokesman for Southmead Hospital in Bristol where the triplets were born. The children spent nine weeks in the hospital but the reason was not disclosed.

The girls — two identical twins delivered from one womb and a single baby from the other — were born seven weeks early by Caesarean, the British Broadcasting Corp. reported.

Kersey and her partner Mick Faulkner said they were “over the moon” at how healthy and happy the girls were.

Separate or partially joined wombs are uncommon, although not rare. About one woman in 1,000 has them, according to Khalaf.

BBC calls it a “25 million to one” event: BBC (more details).

Oh.. and I guess this means that our “Christmas Miracle” stories have officially begun. :-)

  1. SN says:

Oh no! Not the friggin Christmas Miracle stories!

  2. SN says:

Gives whole new meaning to the phrase “two holing a hottie”!

  3. Eric says:

My wife actually has a ‘double womb’ – we didn’t know until we went to the doctor about a miscarraige she had several years ago. The docs think that one is pretty much non-functional and probably was the one that miscarried, and another fully functional one.

Two healthy boys since then in uterus #2!

  4. Eideard says:

I claim “dibs” on Xmas Miracles with the Komodo Dragon.

  7. Joell says:

I know an 80+ year old woman here in town that is from the exact same type of birth. She’s one of the identical twins and she also has (had) a brother.

  8. KB says:

Yes, SN (#1), it’s that happy time of year again. But Eideard (#4) is right; he is the one who actually threw down the Christmas miracle gauntlet.

She always wanted a womb with a view.
(I’m hoping to get a better sense of humor for Christmas)

  13. Hugh Jass says:

That’s not a womb, that is a suite.
