There’s just something about the phrase “legally blind hunter”…

80(R) HB 308 – Introduced version

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:

SECTION 1. Section 62.005, Parks and Wildlife Code, is amended to read as follows:
Sec. 62.005. HUNTING WITH LIGHT. Except as provided by Section 62.0055, no [No] person may hunt a game animal or bird protected by this code with the aid of an artificial light that casts or reflects a beam of light onto or otherwise illuminates the game animal or bird, including the headlights of a motor vehicle.

SECTION 2. Subchapter A, Chapter 62, Parks and Wildlife Code, is amended by adding Section 62.0055 to read as follows:
Sec. 62.0055. HUNTING WITH LASER SIGHTING DEVICE BY LEGALLY BLIND HUNTER.
(a) In this section, “legally blind” has the meaning assigned by Section 62.104, Government Code.
(b) A legally blind hunter may use a laser sighting device during regular hunting hours when assisted by a person who is not legally blind.
(c) The legally blind hunter must carry proof of being legally blind.

Do the hunted get permission to use special gear if they are blind?

  1. farmer says:

Why not? We allow legally drunk Vice Presidents to hunt.

  2. Jim Scarborough says:

And we even elect incompetent Presidents!

This makes me wonder how the person might have gotten blind in the first place – perhaps by staring into another hunter’s laser?

  3. Roc Rizzo says:

Why? So that (s)he can make others blind with the laser device?

  4. mandarin says:

Wait a minute, so in this country, we allow people who are legally blind to carry firearms? Isnt that like allowing a blind person to drive?

  5. John Paradox says:

Legally blind does not mean you can’t see at all.

As I recall, 20/400 vision, uncorrected, is the definition of legal blindness. Those of us who are correctable via glasses or contact lenses are able to have regular 20/20 (or better) vision with correction.

    J/P=?

  6. edwinrogers says:

Accompanied, laser shooting is probably a good thing. Think about it. It will let vision impaired people purposefully interrelate with sighted companions in a friendly outdoor environment – which is conducive to the forming of good male friendship. It is hard to find many of those old fashioned manly social activities that our fathers enjoyed, especially so if a guy has poor vision. Lining up a game-bird and your buddy telling you when you’re on the target, requires not only trust but communication. Alternatively, they could legalize hand grenades for blind partridge hunters, in Texas, but I don’t think that’s a good idea.

  7. ECA says:

    Ummm…
Has anyone here, seen what happens to a RED DOT, at more then 10 yards? Esp on something with Hair and is a Brown/black color??
Unless its got alot of White in the color, IT AINT going to help.

As a guide device, It would be easier to have those Plastic Glow tupes for aiming.

  8. Mr. Fusion says:

Along as the blind hunter is accompanied with a sighted person, I don’t see the problem. It would get them out of the house any way.

Besides, they might stray up to Indiana and get a few of the deer that like to play chicken with cars.

  9. Gwendle says:

Beautiful, anyone else catch that as a Kyv from Everquest? From the sky it looks like Blind Hunter from Muramite Proving Grounds, which would be fitting for the story.

  10. Angel H. Wong says:

The joy of shooting someone in the darkness 😛

  11. Uncle Dave says:

    #10: Good call!

  12. Arbo Cide says:

Well they just ruled that money discriminates, so not letting them hunt would too.

  13. noname says:

If it was a SASER (SOUND Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation) rather then a laser, I could understand this.

  14. Gwendle #10… your Dork is showing…
I read the bit about “when assisted by a person who is not legally blind” and I guess in that regard then lasers and “legally” blind, not actually blind would be fine. Like anything else, if the people involved make bad decisions, bad things will happen. As I don’t live in Texas or care too much about hunting, I hope it works out for you guys!

  15. Alice Tripp says:

A legally blind hunter actually hunts with a sighted “spotter”. At present the spotter looks over their shoulder and down the sight to help line up the cross-hairs on the game. The blind hunter is responsible for being steady and pulling the trigger. He/She takes the game. Allowing a laser sight for hunting game animals will allow the “spotter” to sit next to his hunter to assist. The handicapped deserve to be “made whole” when possible and practical. This is both. Check out Sgt. Jeremy Feldbusch and the Wounded Warrior Project.

  16. retard says:

how retarded can this country get.

  17. graham says:

WHY CANT YOU PEOPLE FIND SOMETHING ELSE TO DO WITH YOUR TIME AND LEAVE THE ANIMALS ALONE YOU MURDERING BASTARDS

  18. STINKyF!NGERS says:

NICK SUCKS MONKEY BALLS, MY ASS, HIS DADS COCK,
SHIT HOLES,LION DICK AND A HUGE BALL OF POO
    FUCK U JKJKJKJKJKJKJKJK
