OK. Seriously. I want one of these.

Tag Heuer’s Concept ‘Monaco V4 ‘ Belt Drive Watch

The ‘Monaco V4 ‘. Built by the renowned Swiss DMC Group for Tag Heuer. They have thrown out the traditional pinion based mechanics and invented a new method of automatic timekeeping, the first patented belt transmission wristwatch. Powered by an oscillating linear weight that falls back and forth within the central shaft – transmitting the energy to the four ball bearing barrels. All part of the mechanical revolution in watchmaking where everyone is trying to reinvent the wheel – but this time with belts.

Originally inspired by the 1969 Heuer (pre-Tag) Monaco made famous by Steve McQueen in his race car flick ‘Le Mans’. They also reproduce the original Monaco more faithfully.

  1. Les says:

Ok, what happens when the belt breaks? Is there a 16,000 hour belt change needed.

    Cool looking watch though.

  2. Roger M says:

The video was pretty damn good. I wouldn’t mind one. But even a “normal” version goes for a couple of grand, so I can just imagine the tag on this one….

  3. Awake says:

And the advantage of this over an electronically controlled watch is…
    …thinking…
    …thinking…
    …thinking…
    …OK, I give up.

But it is cool looking, I’ll admit that.

  4. Smartalix says:

I just love that analog timekeeping is still alive. Digital watches are for dweebs.

Yes, I know I’m a geek, but I wear an analog timepiece;there are some things that transcend functionality.

  5. sdf says:

Everyone knows belt-drive is superior to direct-drive.

  6. Les says:

I’m waiting for the 8 track model.

  7. acree says:

yeah this has been around for a couple years now. Its many thousands of dollars if i remember correctly.

    very cool though

  8. Peter Rodwell says:

It’s neat, but I’ll stick with my Rolex – 20 years old and still running perfectly.

  9. Lauren the Ghoti says:

After centuries of development, it ain’t easy to come up with something truly novel in mechanical timekeeping, but they done done it.

#3 – There is zero advantage. It’s for people who appreciate mechanical ingenuity. Timekeeping is secondary. If you want the time, buy a Casio; if you want classy & cool, a TAG Heuer or the like.

  10. Major Jizz says:

I agree with #. If that belt is made of Rubber wouldn’t it start to come apart after some time?

  11. sniffsmith says:

I want one of those. I’ve visited their site and I’ve seen a mobile phone made by them… It’s just…… superb !
