How many people can fit on a Japanese subway at rush hour? Always room for one more is the rule of thumb we go by here. BTW, this video is most likely at Shibuya station’s Inokashira line at about midnight. Been there, done that. It’s one thing to watch this, but jumping on is even more of a laugh (unless you are female of coarse), after a few beers that is…
I would say at least 2500 people per 10 car trainset.
I got caught up on a rush hour train on the Chuo Line back in 2002, it’s a 16 car trainset on that particular line and it was completely packed inside there, and I was the 6’1″ mammoth sticking out looking above everybody’s heads (almost… the younger generation seem to be eating a lot of imported food filled to the brim with hormones), a 16 car trainset can probably carry 4000 people at one go.
On the Yamanote Line, they’re getting new trains that have 5 instead of 4 doors and the seats fold up during rush hour so it’s standing room only. I think a 10 car trainset of these can hold as many as the 16 car Chuo Line trainset.
(These capacities I mentioned are no breathing room kinda capacities… 6 people per 10 sq. ft.)
