I know you are dismayed and disheartened at the results of last week’s election. You’re worried that the country is heading toward a very bad place you don’t want it to go. Your 12-year Republican Revolution has ended with so much yet to do, so many promises left unfulfilled. You are in a funk, and I understand.

1. We will always respect you for your conservative beliefs. We will never, ever, call you “unpatriotic” simply because you disagree with us. In fact, we encourage you to dissent and disagree with us.

2. We will let you marry whomever you want, even when some of us consider your behavior to be “different” or “immoral.” Who you marry is none of our business. Love and be in love — it’s a wonderful gift.

3. We will not spend your grandchildren’s money on our personal whims or to enrich our friends. It’s your checkbook, too, and we will balance it for you.

4. When we soon bring our sons and daughters home from Iraq, we will bring your sons and daughters home, too. They deserve to live. We promise never to send your kids off to war based on either a mistake or a lie.

5. When we make America the last Western democracy to have universal health coverage, and all Americans are able to get help when they fall ill, we promise that you, too, will be able to see a doctor, regardless of your ability to pay. And when stem cell research delivers treatments and cures for diseases that affect you and your loved ones, we’ll make sure those advances are available to you and your family, too.

6. Even though you have opposed environmental regulation, when we clean up our air and water, we, the Democratic majority, will let you, too, breathe the cleaner air and drink the purer water.

7. Should a mass murderer ever kill 3,000 people on our soil, we will devote every single resource to tracking him down and bringing him to justice. Immediately. We will protect you.

8. We will never stick our nose in your bedroom or your womb. What you do there as consenting adults is your business. We will continue to count your age from the moment you were born, not the moment you were conceived.

9. We will not take away your hunting guns. If you need an automatic weapon or a handgun to kill a bird or a deer, then you really aren’t much of a hunter and you should, perhaps, pick up another sport. We will make our streets and schools as free as we can from these weapons and we will protect your children just as we would protect ours.

10. When we raise the minimum wage, we will pay you — and your employees — that new wage, too. When women are finally paid what men make, we will pay conservative women that wage, too.

11. We will respect your religious beliefs, even when you don’t put those beliefs into practice. In fact, we will actively seek to promote your most radical religious beliefs (“Blessed are the poor,” “Blessed are the peacemakers,” “Love your enemies,” “It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God,” and “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.”). We will let people in other countries know that God doesn’t just bless America, he blesses everyone. We will discourage religious intolerance and fanaticism — starting with the fanaticism here at home, thus setting a good example for the rest of the world.

12. We will not tolerate politicians who are corrupt and who are bought and paid for by the rich. We will go after any elected leader who puts him or herself ahead of the people. And we promise you we will go after the corrupt politicians on our side FIRST. If we fail to do this, we need you to call us on it. Simply because we are in power does not give us the right to turn our heads the other way when our party goes astray. Please perform this important duty as the loyal opposition.

I promise all of the above to you because this is your country, too. You are every bit as American as we are. We are all in this together. We sink or swim as one. Thank you for your years of service to this country and for giving us the opportunity to see if we can make things a bit better for our 300 million fellow Americans — and for the rest of the world.

Signed,

Michael Moore,

I saved Michael’s signature for the end. Some conservatives and religious folk I know — wouldn’t read this pledge if they knew he emailed it, this morning.

No one like that around here, of course.

  1. Proud Alien says:

Amen! I will never understand how some people can reject these simple principles and why they get angry when reminded of them.

  2. WokTiny says:

yeah, because the promise of one mudslinger is better than the promise of another…

  3. AB CD says:

    >respect you for your conservative beliefs. We will never, ever, call you >“unpatriotic”

We know that’s not true. We heard Kerry and Teresa throw words like unamerican at Republicans alot.

    2.Marry anyone sounds about right.

    >not spend your grandchildren’s money on our personal whims or to >enrich our friends.

That’s a joke. I might believe it if they pass social security reform rather than filibuster it.

    >promise never to send your kids off to war based on either a mistake >or a lie.

So was Bill Clinton telling the truth when he said Saddam was a threat when he attacked Iraq? And how in the world can they promise not to make mistakes, unless they’re promising total pacifism?

The rest of the list is the same, so I’ll just skip to the end.

    >We will not tolerate politicians who are corrupt
So they’re not going ot make Jack Murtha(ABSCAM) majority leader?
And they won’t put a judge impeached for bribery(Hastings) on the Intelligence Committee? And they’ll throw out Allan Mollohan? And what about Ted Kennedy and Chappaquiddick?

  4. Max says:

    Lesse –

    1) Blah
    2) Blah
    3) Yeah, right…
    4) Big words. I’m glad Mike’s now the arbitrator of all things “liberal” and can make that pledge. Who elected him to anything?
    5) Doesn’t this contradict #3?
    6) Oh – why even bother… This has already grown tiresome…

  5. Olo Baggins of Bywater says:

It seems that you were right, Eideard.

  7. Curt Fields says:

You’ll get your own corrupt first. OK Get Ted Kenneddy for murder. Franks for the same thing as Folly ( at least we kicked him Folly out), Clinton for perjury(hell, you even reelected him, ) knowing this. At least the legal bar ejected him. Spare me your lies. You are so corrupt you wiulhn’t know evil if it hit you in the face. Your movie shows what a liar you are.

  8. Mike Voice says:

    We = liberal = Democrat

    You = conservative = Republican

    What a pompous ass…

  9. GreenDreams says:

I was proud of Moore when I read this. I’m sorry for the bitter commenters here.

  10. spsffan says:

    Well, okay, except for #9.

You see, I have no desire to hunt, and no desire to keep “hunting guns” I own guns for two reasons. First, I enjoy target shooting. Second, to defent myself and loved ones and my home from the crime epidemic caused mostly by the War on Drugs. For that, handguns are sometimes the ticket. Note that “automatic” guns have been generally banned from private posession since at least 1968.

When Satan finally regains control from the laughter that’s wracking him now, we’re all in trouble.

  12. JimR says:

Interesting. It’s thoughtful, reasonable, healthy, logical… heck throw any positive adjective at it and it sticks. The trouble is that it all hedges on #12.

  13. Tom 2 says:

I think they need a big hug too. 😉 .

  14. Mucous says:

#11 – Nothing bitter here. Just factual analysis. MM is treasonous and evil .

  15. Sundog says:

So much for a clean slate, you guys for the most part, suck.

  16. Sundog says:

Mucous, yeah, the name says it all, worthless .

  17. Pekuliar says:

Well at least he has put his position in writing so we can evaluate it in two years. Trouble is he is not speaking for the Democratic party. The Democratic party can’t agree on anything. They have no center, no common belief system, no vision to hold them together. They are a big empty tent. Desire for power and the ability to character assassinate may get you into office when you have a fumbling, incompetent opponent but now they have to govern and without that center they will fractionate. You guys got your ass handed to you on a silver platter, and by the likes of Michael Moore!!! I am laughing my butt off.

  20. Eideard says:

We’ll continue to closehaul it, folks. Try to stay within a mile or two of the Comments Guide and Topic.

  21. Mucous says:

Sorry about #13. I’m working hard here. The problem with talking about Moore and his beliefs is that it’s like talking about my golf game. No words in the English language including any kind of profanity can accurately describe the horror of it all. 😉

Here’s the difference between liberals and conservatives.

Conservatives want everyone to have more in life. And they also believe that it’s okay for one person to do more better than someone else. It’s not unfair for one person to have more in life than someone else. We all have different abilities.

Liberals resent anyone who’s successful in life (except their own annointed intellectual elite like John Kerry). The liberal’s goal is drag down the successful instead of trying to elevate the unsuccessful (and successful). The more you make, the more you get taxed. Talk about an Un-American concept.

If you ever want to shut up a Liberal all you need to do is name a problem, then ask them how they would solve it without raising taxes or taking something away from someone.

#8 – I have a few dead horses in my backyard… You know, if you run out of dead horses to beat on your own…

#9 – True – If pompous now means honest.

#1 through #22 – Wow… A lot of conservative hate speech getting censored here… I’d oppose that, but this is a privately managed board and I have to support the moderators right to edit as they see fit…

  25. Mike Voice says:

    12Well, okay, except for #9.

Yeah, I did leave it un-finished…

    We = liberal = Democrat = uniter = honest

    You = conservative = Republican = divider = corrupt

    “Pompous ass” stands…

If that is his pledge to disenheartened conservatives, I can’t wait to read the pledge he makes to us sceptical independents…

  26. god says:

Mike V — if you’d seen any of Moore’s statements immediately post-election, you’d know his first priority was to Independents. In fact, the focus was on holding Dems feet to the fire as thoroughly as was done during the Republikan admin.

I think he often makes it clear he holds the Dems to be as spineless as he holds their buddies across the aisle to be corrupt.

  27. tallwookie says:

Nice little speech there Mr Moore.

If 10% of this happens I’d feel a lot better about this country’s future (since it’s been feeling a bit unstable for a while now)… haha if 10% of this happens 90% of the world will breathe that much easier.

  28. Scott Gant says:

As far as gay marriage…if this person here wants to marry that person there…who cares? How is that hurting you or your family?

You know the biggest threat to marriage? Divorce. Divorce erodes away family values by chunks and slices…destroying lives sometimes. So let’s ban divorce first so we can stop the biggest threat, then we’ll worry about these other phantom things that are spooking these homophobic conservatives.

  29. Mike says:

Somebody please tell Michael Moore that the 2nd Amendment has nothing to do with being able to go deer hunting, and that the progressive ideas of liberals like him have done far more to make our society less safe than the right to own a handgun ever has.

  30. WokTiny says:

#30, it will be interesting, once gay marriage is ubiquitous to see what the gay divorce rates are. I read an article once that pointed out violent crime rates against gays by straights and by gays, and wouldn’t you know, ‘hate crimes’ were not as much as a problem as ‘love crimes’. just an illustration to display the divorce rates probably won’t be any better.

    but back to your point

yeah, divorce is a big problem, but its sort of meaningless in a culture that accepts premarital sex & co-habitation because many people just ‘play married’ in that fashion, and divorce rates can’t track them.
