Huge Native American face on Google Earth

Here’s another weird finding on Google Earth. Somewhere in Alberta in Canada you can spot mountains that look like the face of an Indian.

It looks pretty real, even a lot more realistic than the face on Mars IMO. It’s also pretty big, I used the measure tool in Google Earth to measure the size of the Native American’s forehead and its about 225 meters (0.14 miles) long.

You can check it out in Google Maps or just enter 50° 0’38.20″N, 110° 6’48.32″W in Google Earth.

Face on Earth, why it’s interesting

The huge first nations face found near Medicine Hat Alberta is quite the coincidence considering “Medicine Hat” comes from aboriginal roots.

With many relatives from this area, the origin of the name was imprinted in my brain at an early age. Read more about the name on Wikipedia to learn why this face is very intriguing.

Origin of name
The name “Medicine Hat” is the English translation of ‘Saamis’ (SA-AH-UMP-SIN)- the Blackfoot word for the eagle tail feather headress worn by medicine men – or ‘Medicine Hat’. This particular ‘Medicine Hat’ finds its origins from Aboriginal legends about a battle long ago between the Blackfoot and the Cree Indian tribes in which a retreating “Medicine Man” lost his headdress in the South Saskatchewan River.

Is that what a native american looks like, with a huge upper lip, barely any chin, and pouffy hair, with a tarantula tail embedded in its neck? Looks more to me like something from Futurama.

  2. Roc Rizzo says:

Actually, that’s what some Mayan/pre-Columbian art carvings look like.
google Mayan art, and you will see similar images.

  3. Andy Hart says:

And the native american is listing to an iPod with those distinctive ear buds.

  4. RBG says:

IMHO, there is nothing native American about that face. Does it look Asian-like to you? Because that is where native Americans originally came from via a land bridge. That face looks African, I say. And curse you 3, for beating me to your line.

The technical term for all this is called “pareidolia.” Humans are pretty much programmed to quickly recognize human faces and form. Here’s a more thorough explanation from “The Bad Astronomer” who finds Lenin in his shower:

Pareidolia explains why so many can find pictures of Madonna and Child etched on the white part of their Oreo cookie and Jesus on their pizza pan, etc. More: http://skepdic.com/pareidol.html

As for our photo above, almost instantly I see Popeye eating spinach (right profile) at the top back of the guy’s head. A pair of eyes (ET?) staring out above that. There’s a chubby Arabic harem girl laying to the right of the African. Wait, let me take another toke…

Or it could be proof-positive that life on Earth began with a visitation by aliens. Take your pick.

I’m going with the noble warrior listening to an iPod theory… Apparently using the music to meditate in preparation for the great hunt…

I’m also going with the “if you look everywhere you’ll see stuff that resembles stuff” theory, too. But it’s fun so no harm…

  7. Raff says:

Call me a skeptic But I call B.S. on this one.

Can anyone take those gps coordinates and find the same thing using a different satellite than google?

  8. Dugger says:

I think the Native Americans used a different form of Lithium Ion polymer in their iPods.

  9. OhForTheLoveOf says:

But just so we are clear… The native Americans DID have iPods?

They earn Billions from Casino money, it’s no surprise they waste it on iPod sculptures 😉

  11. joshua says:

looks very pre-columbian to me. But, they came over the big bridge as well.

I’ll believe anything. I’m going to rent a movie Friday about an archeologist that digs up a grave from Roman times and finds an old video camera, with film of the crusifiction……I’ll probably believe that to. 🙂

Dude… That’s just like Hollywood to get all the details wrong. It’s not believable or plausible in any way. Everyone knows video cameras use tape and not film!

#4, You and me, and all of us, have similiarities because we all come from Africa. Your ancestors if you go back 45,000 years were BLACK. Always remember where you come from.

Call it BS, but it appears on the Canadian Atlas site as well. You might need to navigate by comparing the map to the Google version. Unfortunately the Canadian map is quite low res, but “the head” is visible. Just like the head on Mars, it’s all shadows.

#13….0113…..lol…great point. I’ve always wondered how the racists amoung us got past that one. Especially the Daughters of the Confederacy.

  16. John Paradox says:

Just got a catalog from Archie McPhee (all the weird stuff that used to be in things like the backs of comic books) and found Holy Toast

  17. MuddyBoy says:

No matter what anyone says, Medicine Hat is not a cure for dandruff.

  18. Uncle Dave says:

#16: Great stuff! Haven’t seen their catalog for ages. I wonder what a Catholic school kid would encounter if he brought one of these to school:

    13. Then try blue-green. As in blue-green algae.

  20. While most commentators wish to dismiss the perception of a face, someone with real interest would think scientifically. Like, assume it’s intentional, done by someone who had the power to sculpt such a thing into the landscape, then go look for evidence. GEOLOGY: Are there differences in the surrounding soils and the soils that shape the face? ARCHEO-ASTRONOMY : What is the orientation of the face to the rotation of the earth? What stars are overhead and when? etc. In short, turn off the tube, and get busy. You’ll have more fun and live longer too.
