This vid is getting alot of play. It supposedly shows some French Marines landing in Lebanon. The problem is they land at a quicksand pit.

  1. Patrick Marks says:

I thought they were british, and just training. I think it was on digg a while back.

  2. ijsbrand says:

And I remember them as being Belgian. It is an old clip. But it illustrates another problem of the Youtubes: were all kinds of scenes without date or data can pose for news.

  3. Nick says:

I’ve seen this before – I’d suspect the video file has been around for quite a while. I saw on it Google Video quite a while ago.

The camouflage pattern does look like the British desert one, and I’d guess these were the Royal Marines –

    – but I’ve no idea where the place is.

  4. Scott says:

    That’s a great classic.

  5. Mike Voice says:

I’m waiting for John to post: “Cripes! I didn’t say it was recent, I said it was getting a lot of play!” 🙂

The question of whether they are French, Belgian, or British reminds me of the post about the Chinook helicopter hovering over a shack – and the question of whether it was an American pilot in Afghanistan, or Italian special forces [comment #3]…

The video is evident that people take life too seriously. I mean, they were stuck right? and being video taped, right? Nobody was shooting at them; they should have started dancing their upper bodies or singing or taking off the gear to do an upper body striptease. Something. Laugh people. We only live once.

  7. chris says:

    only once??

  8. Smartalix says:

    6,

Good point. If that was a hot LZ they would have been pooched.

  9. Carl Trimble says:

So the camera man didn’t warn them of the obsticle? Seems planned.

  10. Fabrizio Marana says:

Definitely not Belgian… Belgian troops don’t have fancy uniforms like that! (I should know: I was in the Belgian army!)

    🙂

#0, #11, Those living in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones, but even I know it’s spelled “a lot” with a space in there 🙂

  12. Constantine says:

    They are British.

    You can tell by
    (a) The camouflage pattern which looks like the British desert cammo patern
    (b) Their assault rifles which are the British SA-80 5.5mm Individual Weapon
    (c) Their helmet style and shape which matches the british ones

  13. Ron Larson says:

Before we get too smug, there are pictures and videos of US troops from the 82nd Airborne who were parachuted in for the attack on the Torrijos-Tocumen complex. A bunch of them landed in mud flats and sank in waist deep. They were sitting ducks. Fortunetly, they were pulled out by Panamanian civilians before the bad guys showed up.

  14. Ron Larson says:

Damn… hit submit too early. You can read about this “stuck-in-mud” incident on page 34, 3rd paragraph.

  15. xrayspex says:

    slide ruler

    That’s “slide rule”.
