Record-setting diesel Honda: 130 mph/24 hours
then got mixed highway/street 78* mpg

Sean King used to hate diesel engines.

They were noisy, they made cars shake and starting them up created a thick cloud of black smoke. That was 20 years ago.

“We start them up inside the dealership these days,” said King, retail sales manager for Louisville Mercedes dealer Tafel Motors.

New federal regulations are forcing major changes in the diesel market. Today, truck stops and gas stations across the country begin selling ultra-low-sulfur diesel, a cleaner version of the fuel that is expected to lead to huge reductions in harmful emissions.

In January, new diesel engine rules will force automakers to cut emissions by as much as 95 percent. As a result, new diesel-powered vehicles will run smoother and quieter than previous models. Those advances, coupled with high gasoline prices, have automakers scrambling to get models on the road.

Last week, Cummins announced it would add 600 to 800 jobs at its Columbus (Ind.) Engine Plant to build diesel engines for Dodge, Chrysler and Jeep trucks and SUVs. Cummins has provided engines for Dodge heavy duty trucks since the 1989 model year, but this will be its first foray into mass-market diesels.

On the car side, Honda has shown off a four-cylinder diesel engine that could be used in its midsized Accord sedan in the next few years. Volkswagen plans diesel Beetle compact cars and Jetta midsized sedans by 2008.

Honda can use fuel-efficient, low-emissions diesel sedans to draw buyers away from Toyota’s hybrid models, he said. Riddell added that automakers that make both diesels and hybrids will be able to offer custom-fit vehicles to buyers with environmental concerns.

“If you drive in long commutes every day, diesels are better,” Riddell said. “If you’re driving in the city every day, a hybrid is better.”

Joe Loughrey, Cummins president and chief operating officer, said he hopes drivers will give the new vehicles a try when they get on the road.

“Because of some of the things that happened in the past and some outdated images of diesels, it will take some time to gain acceptance,” Loughrey said.

If your only experience with a diesel-powered automobile is founded on a poorly maintained yuppie Volvo or Mercedes from a couple decades ago — or, even worse, absolutely anything powered by the POS diesel V8 shoved out the door by GM, long ago and unforgotten — you have a pleasant surprise coming.

When they get to your neighborhood, try one of the new generation. The diesel fuel should have arrived this weekend.

*At first, I didn’t notice the mileage was rated in Imperial gallons.  Now, correct for U.S..

  1. ECA says:

    But, NOW…
US corps can Raise the prices higher because they WOnt sell so much…
Maybe even match Canada and England prices….About $5 per gallon.

get me an old steam engine with NEW tech on it, and recombine the water After it goes thru, and you dont have to measure MPG, you get to recycle 90% of the water or other material, around and around and around…

  2. JoaoPT says:

And the heat source could be nuclear fission, right, ECA?

  3. Hans Friedman says:

    #27,

For 2007, Volkswagen will not produce and diesels for the US market. Mainly because of new laws on the new lower sulfer diesel. Buy an ’06 or wait. I say wait for the hybrid diesels with grease kits!

  4. ECA says:

    32, could…
But I would consider the NEW small Alcohol jets… Or even Nitrogen, oxy mix and make a blow torch.. Peroxide burn if you want that extra boost…

I dont care if you use coal or Wood or Pellets fires, crab some dry weeds on the corner and away you go.

  5. ECA says:

And useing Propane/butane insted of water, as we are NOT exploding it.. only using it as the STEAM part of the expanion, it reduces to Liquid at about 40 degrees, and expands 10,000,000 times at 100 degrees…you really dont need alot of heat, you body could supply enough to get you 6 blocks…

  6. JoaoPT says:

Hmmmm….what about the energy conservation law? How come my body temperature would be enough to drive me and my car around 6 blocks?
You got to do some math here…

  7. Tom says:

No, because to do it requires low sulphur diesel, something has been available in Europe for many years now but only since a few days ago in the U.S.

    Tom

“Don’t you think clean diesiels could have been made ten years ago? Twenty? ”

  8. ECA says:

36, you heat could apply enough expanion to Propane from a liquid state(40 degrees) to expand about 100,000 times before you ALMOST froze to death, from your body dropping temperature, below 85…

  9. JoaoPT says:

Sorry to drive this point endlesslly… but, what would be the pressure? would it be enough to drive you 6 blocks? That being the case you could build a propane “steam” engine that could drive you aroung the country heated with a Zippo ligher, right? And why haven’t already somone did so?…

  10. ECA says:

39, because you need more heat then that. to run a re-compressor and condensor.. the trick comes with useing a sterling type return system.
Even if I use 10% of the fuel mixture to heat the other 90%, then the next 10% to heat the 80%…

There is a problem…the gas corps wont make money.
Its the only reason they wont use a compressed canister, over Hydrogen TABLETS…they want to make a propritary system that you have to pay MORE for. they want you to Pay GAS prices for something you can get at the Weilding shop in most towns, CHEAP..

  11. The Car Geek says:

Diesel are great for it has lower cost than other fuels.. But it has also higher cost when it comes to the environment which in return has been causing the greenhouse effect on earth… Though i heard that Volkswagen will make some hybrid plig-in cars that will run by electricity instead of diesel fuels… Which would really minimize the black smoke emitted in a Volkswagen mufflers. it would really be a great endeveavor and will surely change the world of automotive…
