Here are some shots I took recently at a Blue Angels performance. It is an amazing sight to see those machines scream through the air with such precision in a raw demonstration of power and control.
This guy was doing a slow flyby standing on his tail. The thrust-to-weight ratio of this aircraft is amazing.
Meh… What a waste of tax money.
Except for the Coast Guard.
Never underestimate the value of air superiority.
For the photo geeks in the group – please comment on what camera you used… Jose.
… and, if an SLR, what lens.
The photo is taken by a basic Pentax Optio S.

Thats about all your military are good for, as you sure aren’t winning any of the wars you started with them.
Alix: Where was the air show? Looks like a blast!
The Blue Angels, I take it they are the USA’s air display team, wonder where they got their name, did you know that the UK’s is called the Red Devils ?
he Blue Angels are the Navy demonstration team (for those tha don’t know), the GOOD demonstration team is the Thunderbirds (Air Force team). =)
Nice photos smartalex, and dear god #’s 1 and 8, get a life, cripes.
Major Jizz is right, I used an “old” Pentax Optio S. I always carry it around in a Altiods can in my pocket. You can have the best camera in the world, but if you don’t have it with you when the opportunity presents itself, you’re out of luck. I also believe that photography is more the eye than the camera, anyway.
The Army even has a precision flying team, the Golden Knights, they just don’t use airplanes.
As for utility, to show a huge crowd of taxpayers (here at Fisherman’s Wharf in San Fransico) that at least some of their money is being spent on good aircraft with talented people to fly them is worth it to ANY government. How they are used is a different debate.
To see 30 metric tons (full combat weight) of metal rip through the sky directly overhead is an awesome sight and a very pointed reference to the concept of force projection.
The problems we’re having now in the Middle East have nothing to do with the talent of our troops and the quality of (most of) their weapons systems, but with the wisdom of their leadership. I was very proud to watch these fine men and women demonstrate their skills.
All part of San Francisco’s ‘Fleeet Week’. What you miss from the photo’s is the SOUND!!!! And the feeling of standing on a roof top on a hill in SF and having then fly 500′ over your head from behind and zoom out over SF Bay and joind up with the formation. I am so jealous! It has to be a blast . Who cares what this costs. It’s worth it. Even for the moment when we land lubbers imagine what it might be like. I guess they arn’t allowed to knife edge between the buildings anymore! I remember when they could! WOW!
Ok, I feel like a dork but where are the photos? All I get is the introductory description and the comments.
Here’s a photo I took yesterday of the Blue Angels, performing at the Miramar Airshow.
Sorry, I was having problems with my site. The pics are back now.
