These were created by Tomasz Bagiński, a Polish animator, who was nominated for an Oscar a few years ago for The Cathedral. There’s a high-res version of The Cathedral on various BitTorrent sites that really shows how spectacular it is. And, it was supposedly done on a regular PC using 3D Studio Max.

Amazing videos…
Check this site too…

Before the deletion of TechTV by G4, there was a series (13 episodes total) called Eye Drops, which featured some videos created by various people. It introduced me to ANIMUSIC, and led to my buying the first DVD (a second has also been released, and I would suggest if you like music and video animation that you check them out).
Of course, after a run of the series shortly after G4 bought TechTV, they have never been seen again, a pity, really and truly. There were some pretty amazing videos.
J/P=?
Don’t be so amazed that he did it on a regular PC with 3D studio…most everything today is done on a “regular” PC, usually with off-the-shelf software and custom software to link various programs together as their “pipeline”.
So guys doing 3D things in their bedroom or basement are the next animators/modelers of tomorrow. Also, 3D Studio Max shouldn’t be considered a “just with” type of program since it costs over $3,000 (unless they changed their prices).
Another good site for all things CG is:
http://www.cgsociety.org/
#4: I guess I should have been more specific. The Cathedral was made several years ago when computers weren’t as powerful as they are today, so it was more impressive considering the complexity of the images than if it were made today. Plus (and this may just be my lack of understanding of how things are there) but the animator lives in Poland and I’m not sure what they had access to back then.
For the record, I’ve played around with computer graphics for about 10 years so I’m pretty familiar with what’s involved.
Uncle Dave, I did come across as if I was yawning or wasn’t impressed…but nothing could be further from the truth. I’m VERY impressed with anyone that can do this as I’ve been in and out of the industry for quite a while…but never got myself up to the level of craftsmanship that guys today have.
Also, if you look at cgsociety.org now, you’ll see many artists from Europe that do this sort of thing, but you’re right, not sure how they were back 10 years ago.
But to also put things in perspective, all the special effects of Babylon 5’s first few seasons were done on Amigas using Lightwave. Granted, the effects may or may not look dated today, but they were pretty nice back then. Though the resolution they had to render to was only NTSC standards.
I love the concepts involved more than the tech.
Yeah, I had forgotten about Babylon 5. For it’s day, it had exceptional effects given what they were created on.
