Not that he’s starving to death

Guardian Unlimited Arts | | Stupid Fox — Fox has repeatedly dropped some of the finest art for odd reasons. I doubt that the Simpson’s would even be on if it was just beginning. Judge was first screwed by Fox when Office Space, an incredible classic, went straight to DVD with no promotion ever.

So why was Idiocracy dumped? Perhaps because it taps a growing anti-corporate mood in the nation; perhaps because it expertly satirises the jingoistic self-absorption that now passes for public culture. Or perhaps because more people are sick of the modern America that Fox energetically helped to build than the Fox corporation itself is ready to admit.

  1. Trevor says:

So when do the torrents come out?

  2. J says:

OO wow! He looks a little heavier than the last time I saw him.

  3. Beeblebrox says:

I’ve seen Idiocracy. The first and last ten minutes are absolutely hysterical comic genius. And like the best satire, it is more or less spot on truth. The middle, however, is light on laughs and goes in directions that I myself didn’t really care for.

Luke Wilson plays the most average guy in the military. He is chosen for an experiment on suspended animation but when the plug is pulled on the project, he wakes up 500 years in the future to find that he is now the smartest man in the world. The problem is that it takes a LONG time to get to this revelation, and the parts inbetween could be a lot funnier. It’s entertaining, but not as funny as Office Space.

They were still testing the film when I saw it, even though it was technically a limited release. I guess the feedback wasn’t positive enough for Fox to go ahead with a wider launch. Too bad.

  4. Todd says:

Ummmm, I saw office space in the theater.

  5. red-stapler biy says:

yeah hook us up w/ a torrent, this looks like a laugh-a-minute.

  6. Lavi says:

Umm, excuse me have you seen my stapler? Its a red…

  7. Jim W says:

Just going from Beeblebrox’s discription it (Idiocracy) sounds like a knockoff / twist of Futurama.

Reading the plot summary from the article only served to confirm my view.

  8. Babaganoosh says:

Dammit! This isn’t being screened anywhere near me 🙁 Bring on the torrents!

  9. J says:

Anyone who has ever work for or with Fox knows how they operate. It is no surprise.

  10. Yeah, i saw it in the theater as well. First run!

  11. OhForTheLoveOf says:

Yes, Office Space was definately in the theater. Also in the theater at the same time, Fight Club and American Beauty – two films that share similar themes of male dissatisfaction.

  12. Angel H. Wong says:

I hope that one day King of the Hill will be canceled.

  13. J says:

    Angel H. Wong

    Why? Just don’t watch it.

  14. Mr. H. Fusion says:

Angel, why do you hate America?

  15. Ed C says:

The people at FOX are asses. I’m not surprised. Their loss.

  16. John Paradox says:

suspended animation but when the plug is pulled on the project, he wakes up 500 years in the future to find that he is now the smartest man in the world.

Hmm.. sounds suspiciously like The Marching Morons, my favorite C.M. Kornbluth short story.

    J/P=?

  17. Milo says:

The plot is lifted from a great sci fi story called “Marching Morons”. The Wikipedia link appears to be overwhelmed!

  18. J says:

    Mr. H. Fusion

    I don’t think she hates America……….Just Texas!

  19. John Paradox says:

The Wikipedia link appears to be overwhelmed!

Explains why it took so long for me to get the link…..

    J/P=?

  20. Jägermeister says:

Fox’s management philosophy seems to be close to the title of one of the Dilbert albums… Random acts of management… hey, they can’t be wrong all the time… 😉

  21. Tom says:

It will probably take like 100 years after his death before he is truly recognized as the the most influential artist of our generation.

  22. Marco D Beest says:

Actually, I believe in 500 years he will be seen as the smartest of the writers.

  23. Dougless says:

Perhaps cult classics are better off by not marketing them. Perhaps for some demographics marketing has the opposite effect .

This movie is getting marketed, and we are doing the marketing. This article has already piqued my interest. And they didn’t spend a dime to do it.

I cannot find out how much Office Space made in total sales, but the figure is probably huge, and without any marketing.

  24. chuck says:

If Judge keeps getting screwed over by Fox, why does he keep working for them? ($)

  25. J says:

    chuck

    One. He has a contract.

Two. It is a very risky and difficult process to sell artistic property to a studio you have never worked with before. The enemies you know are more predictable than the enemies you don’t

  26. James Hill says:

In the words of Butt-head, I don’t like stuff that sucks.

  27. OhForTheLoveOf says:

#25 – If Judge keeps getting screwed over by Fox, why does he keep working for them? ($)

If you could only get averge sex frequently or great sex occassionally… Well, for some of us its a hard choice to make.

  28. Office Space was an unexceptional film. Instead of constantly cooking up conspiratorial explanations for phenomena, perhaps the simple explanation is that Idiocracy just isn’t a good film.

  29. J says:

I have to admit I think mikes films require a particular taste and they are not for everybody.

  30. Peter iNova says:

I saw it. Verrrry funny. It has a European look and temperament, appealing more to thinking viewers.

One of those films that will probably sell much more in non-theater releases.
