UK satellite broadcaster BSkyB has temporarily shut down its fledgling broadband film service after software provided by Microsoft was cracked, enabling the digital protection to be stripped.

The problem, caused by hacking software FreeUse4WM, also affected sports clips on the Sky by broadband service, which was launched in January.

“We took this step as a precaution after Microsoft said it was working on an update to its digital rights management software, which is used to protect content on Sky by broadband against unauthorized copying or distribution,” a Sky spokesman said on Tuesday.

He declined to comment on when the broadband service, which was halted on August 31, would be up and running, deferring questions to Microsoft.

The software giant said it was devising another patch, after already having rushed out an earlier one when the initial software was cracked. A new version of FreeUse4WM broke through the patch.

Tee-Hee.

If only M$ would patch other problems so fast. Just goes to show the folly of DRM in general. It will always be able to be cracked and by passed no matter what they’re telling hollywood. So it makes you wonder why use it all.

I’m sure they did their best… but sorry, that’s not good enough… 😉

    Good.

DRM needs to fail. The DMCA needs to be tested and scrapped.

I buy retail DVDs, both new and used. I buy actual CDs. The lossy format of downloads is crap. I buy tickets to movies and concerts. And yet, I still feel as if I am being punished by DRM software without actually breaking any laws.

I think that as soon as M$ makes another patch on top of the last one to “fix” this supposid probblem. It will only take 2 days mabe 24h to crack it again.

#1, I can do you one better.

    HA! HA! HA!

#4, My thoughts exactly. Only I don’t buy many Cds anymore, their just ain’t any worth buying. And my DVDs buying is slowed down for the same reason.

The news on slashdot is that Apple DRM gets cracked even faster than microsoft DRM.
