WKMG – Honolulu – September 7, 2006:

Thousands of motorists in Honolulu were stranded in their vehicles for 14-hours after a military vehicle clipped a pedestrian bridge near a major freeway overpass, forcing officials to close the road, according to a Local 6 News report.

Officials said the traffic jam caused by the incident in the westbound lanes of the H-1 Freeway in Honolulu was the worst in Hawaii’s history.

Many commuters slept in their cars overnight or just abandoned them on the freeway.

  1. Matthew says:

I got stuck in traffic for more than fourteen hours at least twice in the last few years. So did a million other evacuees here in New Orleans. Summer sun, car full of animals, cell phones not working – good times.

  2. Bill says:

14hrs.? We’d be happy with that in San Francisco!

  3. Drew says:

Even the L.I.E. isn’t that bad!

  5. Marc Bertone says:

In 2004, at the final Phish concert in Vermont I got stuck in traffic for over 30 hours, going a total of about 4-5 miles. I think we got stuck in traffic late Thursday night or Friday morning, and didnt actually get out until mid-day Saturday. We eventually had to ditch the car, get a ride from a local via a restricted entrance, and then hike in the last mile or so.

  6. Improbus says:

You think that is bad? I got stuck for three days in a blizzard. Those people in Honolulu had it easy.
