Virgin Mary in tortilla

Dozens of children have fainted, apparently because of mass hysteria, after school authorities in Nepal killed a snake, considered as sacred by many Hindus, witnesses said on Thursday. At least 67 students, aged between nine and 16 years, have had fainting fits since Tuesday in the mainly Hindu country, they said.

“Children suddenly scream, cry and faint,” Rishikesh Baral, assistant headmaster of the school, told Reuters by phone.

“Some recover after a couple of hours while others are yet to fully recover. We apologize for killing the snake.”

A local journalist said priests scattered rice and sprinkled holy water in classrooms to drive away the snake’s “spirit.”

Not surprising! I could see this happening in my neck of the woods, say — if someone in the school cafeteria gobbled up a cheese sandwich shaped like the Virgin Mary.

… or if a broadcast TV network put on an anti-Clinton movie.

Ah. Ain’t nothing like the Swift Boat defense of superstition.

  4. Jimbo says:

No mention of why the snake was killed. Here in the US we send “counselors” to schools when kids die, etc. I suppose this keeps the kids from screaming and fainting.

You’re too late, JIMR. These guys probably have you covered:

#3, Swift Boat? There’s an ABC special on the mystical powers of snakes this coming Sunday and Monday! I hear it has a thorough backgrounder on the guy who killed the snake and something about how the importance of the snake slipped his mind because he was distracted by an extramarital affair…. All leading to school children passing out because of his ineptitude. But who’s inept here?

Remember: Vote Republican in November or the terrorists will bomb you.

I believe our sacred snakes are called zygotes.

  8. Drew says:

Man…you all or so smart! Especially you, John. What’s it like being you?

India is a wonderfully mystical and religious country. The Western slanted commentary should be checked unless you understand the culture(s). Even though I’m agnostic, I do try to respect and understand the faith of others. It’s not easy, and I admit I sometime fail. Religion is a major part of human culture. To dismiss it outright robs you of better understanding of humanity. Such failures in understanding contributes to current and past conflicts.

#6, Jim. Have you seen that movie about the snake that told us a pack of lies? The one where the snake and his little snakettes keep getting caught telling lies as they slither around on their slimy stomachs. Of coarse, the snakes tried telling us how it was all garbage even though there was only a couple of small errors in it. Like, when the movie pointed out how the snakes ate poop sandwiches and the snakes replied how they don’t like their bread buttered.

I don’t remember the name of the movie, but it is something like the telephone emergency number. It was by a film maker named Michael something. I wish there were moor film makers like him.

  11. So go live there #9. Put up or shutup. No need to put someone else down.

Finally a hidden Virgin Mary pic where I can actually see the Virgin Mary. OK, so where do I go to go worship this thing?
