Personal data, including credit card information, of thousands of AT&T customers was stolen by hackers over the weekend, the company reported late Tuesday.

The breach, which affected customers who purchased DSL equipment through AT&T’s Web store was discovered within hours and the online store was shut down immediately, said AT&T in a press release.

AT&T said it was sending notifications to nearly 19,000 customers, and that it would pay for credit monitoring services for the affected customers.

“We recognize that there is an active market for illegally obtained personal information. We are committed to both protecting our customers’ privacy and to weeding out and punishing the violators,” said Priscilla Hill-Ardoin, chief privacy officer for AT&T, in a statement.

AT&T can’t protect people making purchases through their own online store. They roll over on customer info requested by the NSA.

What exactly is the use of having a Chief Privacy Officer if you offer neither the technology nor the political backbone to back it up?

    It is not only their web store that got hacked. I don’t think AT&T is being completely honest.

    I placed an order with their DSL store BY PHONE and I got a phishing email with detailed information about my order with AT&T.

    When calling AT&T about it, they responded with a cavalier attitude stating that NO possible credit card information was lost, but yeah, they have had some problems with this and they’re “not sure how anyone got the customer’s information.”

    I just called them about this yesterday, and now I see this. It figures! Unbelievable company.

    We URGENTLY need a law which bans companies from storing our credit card numbers unless we give them permission to do so.

    What right does AT&T have to keep my credit card information? NONE!

    But will this do-nothing Congress be pro-active enough to pass such a law? OF COURSE NOT!
