KB posted a comment on this in May when she was setting off on tour. In fact, he used a much better photo.
Madonna has gone ahead with a concert in Dusseldorf despite warnings that German prosecutors were considering legal action over the show’s content.
Prosecutors said they were to monitor the performance after receiving a complaint that the US pop star’s act breached German laws against blasphemy.
In one scene Madonna is seen in a mock crucifixion, wearing a crown of thorns.
I wonder if they have a law against trite choreography?
I see nothing wrong with Madonna’s actions.
I’m sure this website in it’s search for truth and fairness would
display a depiction of mohammad. If it already hasn’t.
Right John?
Madonna is only interested in self promotion and the attention and wealth it brings her. Ignore the aging pop singer and lets move on to something important.
Show you the difference between Islam and Christians.
If she did offensive Islamic thing people would be rioting in the streets and demanding a fatwa against her.
Is Madonna a Christian? I thought she was doing that Kabala thing.
You hit the nail on the head, John. “Trite” is the only way to describe this latest attention grab by an aging pop star desperate to stay relevant.
Can anyone remember when Madonna was actually edgy? Her latest attempts to be controversial are only offensive in their cliched unoriginality.
Ooooh she pretends to crucify herself! My god what will people say?
Lame.
At least “Like a Prayer” was a damn catchy tune.
Can anyone remember when Madonna was anything but a talentless whore wantabe?
I thought so.
David
Say about Madonna what you want, the increase of christian sensitivity is annoying.
Specifically annoying is the German flavour of it, and in the mix of German flavorurs, it’s the Bavarians that made it the clearest: we want to be roman catholic and nothing else. Years ago, a few parents compained that there was an INRI (read: a jesus on a cross) over the door of every state school classroom (there are almost only state run schools). The complaint went all the way up tho the high court which ruled that the state could not, as it did upto then, mandate that religious symbols be displayed in public places. It was then left to the schools to decide whether or not to take down the INRIs, with a clear hint that it was part of Bavarian tradition to have them there. I bet that 99% did remain where they were in the first place. The same state of Bavaria, though, was one of the fiercest fighters against muslim pupils or teachers wearing a headscarf in class, basically pointing to that old INRI ruling.
Isn’t religion a beautiful thing? You always have a reason to beat someone up over it or at least sue him or her.

If an artist, no matter how lame, is arrested in the 21st century for blasphemy, then that is important.

I’m about 40, so I was in high school when she arrived on the scene… So, ahh, no… I don’t ever remember her being edgy.
Her most edginess thing was the photo album (the naked one…). And that was the most commercial thing she did…
Madonna used to bug me to the max… until I got it.
She’s not after innovation for the sake of it. All she ever wanted was to stirr up things to get media attention and then get enough momentum going to become Madonna Inc. She’s a product. Average enough to get to every Joe and Jane on the Planet and then edgy enough to stand out. Beautifully produced, and marketed, the final result is no different of a commodity. Like a Sony TV or a Apple iPod.
Crucifying herself on stage is about right: on track with the theme of the decade (religion issues – her kabala thing is the same…) but bland enough to get by unharmed (phisically…just imagine her doing some muslim heresy…).
At one time, blasphemy was considered worse than murder. It’s an unforgiveable sin. Will they slow-burn Madonna at the stake? Will it be televised?
I thought it was Bush & Co. who ran a theocratic government…….this was in Germany.
I can’t believe they have anti-blasphemy laws still on the books FFS.
6 Can anyone remember when Madonna was anything but a talentless whore wantabe?
Well, I’ve always thought of her as a wealthy, popular, talentless whore wantabe. 🙂
4 Is Madonna a Christian? I thought she was doing that Kabala thing.
I can’t tell from the photo if she still has that red yarn around her wrist…
I like the references to “what if …. islam …” it reminds me that artists use Christian references because its safe, whereas something like islam would not be safe to mimic.
Nearly everyone know at least *of* Christianity, and not much more. So everyone knows the reference, but no one knows the reverence
oh, and what Germany wants to do with its laws is Germany’s business. I won’t think its radical if they chase the issue: IF they have a law, they can enforce it.
Is there SOME reason we care?
Madonna couldn’t even get prints of her “dirty” book pictures on the net. How bad is that? Not that I looked.
I’m thinking something with animals or vegetables, maybe. But that is already over done. I don’t think she has anywhere to go. Public suicide possibly, but even that would be short lived.
Yep, I think that Prophet Mohammad impersonation is the ticket. Should be quite a riot.
Re 14 – I’m not sure if things would be better or worse if Christians were rioting in the streets over this (or similar) … at least then people might stop …
Madonna is an artist. Lucky for her that she has reached the point in her career where she can afford to do what SHE wants instead of being commercial as almost all artists starting out are.
Is her music any good? I don’t have a clue. I don’t listen to her and can’t really remember ever hearing one of her songs. She does have to be doing something right as she is still selling tickets to her shows and a few albums too.
I am more bothered by those that dismiss her as irrelevant simply because they don’t like her music.
I remember when John Lennon spent a week in bed, to protest Viet Nam. I was too young to understand it then and don’t understand today why he did it. But I accept that he not only could, but did.
#12…Calin….those laws aren’t STILL on the boks, they are relatively new laws. Similar to Austrias laws on denying the Holocoust.
Fusion….she really is irrelevant to music today. She could actually have herself nailed to that cross and it won’t win her any awards….her music really sucks. She and MTV came out together and one made the other, her music has never been cutting edge, but her lifestyle and her concerts were. Now, she’s a 40 something suburban English wannabe Mother with children and a straying husband.
Oh,…..by the way….John didn’t post this….unless he spells it different than the rest of us.
Does anyone realize that Jesus wasn’t the only one to ever be crucified? In fact, some people had it even worse by being crucified and then burned at the stake. Quite frankly, with all the sins of today’s population, I would hate to see what he would have to do today to make up for it. (assuming he died just for the sins of those that had come before him as being crucified really isn’t much punishment for all sins of eternity quite frankly.) People in Mexico actually do it for real to honor his rationale.
The point: Crucifixtion isn’t necessarily blasphemous.
its true, Crucifixtion, was common back in the days of Roman oppression. Today, its widely associated with Christ, so its thought to always refer to the one specific case. also, looking up blasphemy also shows that re-enactments don’t count…. at least not in themselves but hey, maybe things got lost in translation…
#23 – , maybe things got lost in translation…

Ya think? In an amalgamation of texts written in Arameic over more than a 400 year span, then translated to Greek, Latin, English, etc., so and so forth, all by scribes with differing political agendas, Divinty of the King and all that… It is a very astute observation that “maybe” things got lost in the translation. Just maybe…
#24 … lighten up
#25…I think he was just trying to emphasize and clarify a good point.
I love Madonna, she sweeps glass !
