Murderer or goofball psycho?

If you do not read anything else this weekend, take the time for this outstanding essay by columnist Bill Johnson. Amsuing and insightful. Good stuff.

excerpt:

I’ve had enough. So I will just come right out and say what others in this business apparently will not: Mary Lacy, that’s not your boy…John Mark Karr as much killed JonBenet Ramsey as Mickey Mouse did. This is a fool’s errand you’re on, and it won’t end pretty…It would make John Mark Karr the dumbest smart murderer who ever lived.

He somehow sneaked into what was then 755 15th St. in Boulder, figured out in which bedroom his “love,” JonBenet was sleeping, got her downstairs unnoticed, fed her pineapple, drugged and sexually assaulted her before smashing her in the head and garroting her to death.

According to his account, such deliberation was done all “by accident.”

Yet he is not done. He sits down and writes a ransom note. Maybe he did it before the pineapple thing. No matter. He scratches out a first draft. It isn’t good enough.

He sits down and crafts a second one. He drops it and skedaddles.

It is a clean getaway, not a trace of John Mark Karr left behind. What’s more, the coroner finds not a trace of either semen on or drugs in the girl.

Perfect crime.

And then what, 10 years later he comes clean? In Bangkok?

  1. Eric Phillips says:

The comments above, that Karr could never have negotiated the house, had time to do all he allegedly did, is meant to imply only the parents could have done it. The witch hunt continues.

And saying that him calling it an acident somehow shows Karr is lying, well, someone who is unable to control himself often calles abuse an accident. Haven’t you ever heard of the wife beater claiming his wife abuse was an accident. Often “losing control” is claimed as acidental. Perhaps Mr. Karr could not control himself in the moment and felt it was accidental.

As it is, many who claim Mr. Karr cannot be the killer do so on incomplete information. Much information was withheld by the investigators from the public to help identify suspects based on what the suspect knows that the public (including the talking heads on CourtTV, MSNBC, FoxNews, et al) does not know. A cop was even quoted as saying he knows details only the investigators know.

They are bringing him back to the US, they are going to do DNA testing on him versus DNA found at the scene that has yet to match a suspect. Let us wait until the investigation is done before claiming this guy did not do it. Even all of you who think Mr. Ramsey did it.

  2. Anon says:

Nice to see after all these years how this “mystery” is still stinking up the airwaves. Maybe they should hire O.J. to be the P.I.

  3. Jim Scarborough says:

WAIT! Sure, there’s a human interest story here, but really, must the media try and convict and/or acquit everyone long before the courts have had an opportunity to hear the evidence? I couldn’t care less what Bill Johnson or anyone else has to say about things except to oversee our government’s operation.

  4. rctaylor says:

Trial by media is a substitute for mob justice. Before courts, and even afterwards, a mob decided who was guilty and strung them up a tree. Every high profile case has nut jobs coming out the woodwork giving confessions. That’s a major reason certain case facts are withheld or even falsified to the press. If there was a reasonable suspicion the guy needed to be extradited. If he’s not guilty I hope they send the nut somewhere before he can do more harm.

  5. Greymoon says:

Whether Karr ends up being the killer remains to be seen. There are a few things I do know about this very sad and unfortunate situation.

The media has assasinated this little girls’ short life.
The media has killed the Ramsey familys’ reputation.
The media has used this whole fiasco to enrich their own pockets.
The media has been an titulating asshole.

Journalism in this country, both lib and conservative, has done nothing to ensure they are worthy of the protections granted them in the US constitution for a long, long time. It’s time they put just the facts and respect back into what it is they do or they have commited suicide.

  6. Named says:

Maybe the only way to get out of a child abuse charge in Bangkok was to cop to the Ramsey case.

  7. Anon says:

If the big bad media printed a million newspapers and magazines, and produced thousands of hours of coverage of useless stories but not a single person ever consumed any of this, would anyone care what the media was doing?

  8. gquaglia says:

I guess I can’t watch the news now for the next few months. Everystory will be about this. No offense, but who cares if he did it or not. Hundreds of people are murdered every year, many children. While tragic, its not worth of non stop media coverage. Put him on trial and be done with it. Its been 10yrs and the story isn’t really that interesting.

  9. OK. How about my theory. Listen to this idea. The guy, as mentioned earlier, was a broke loser. He needed a plane ticket back but didn’t have the money. This was his free trip back and he’ll be kicked free once the DNA match fails. He might even get a book deal as a bonus. But he was only after the free trip.

    C’est possible?

  10. mike cannali says:

It’s worth the cost of an air ticket to find out how this guy knows specifics unreleased to the public. He may be covering for the real perp. He may have overheard a conversation, or jailhouse confession.

At any rate, if it is a hoax, then defrauding the DA out of an air ticket will be another means to get this guy off the street. Fortunately, if he goes into the prison general population, this now famous “kiddie raper” will last about as long as father Gagen did.

  11. Linda Grant says:

Mark Karr didn’t do it. He’s just another freak.

I think JonBenet’s brother did it, and the Ramsey’s are trying to protect their son, because they don’t want to lose him too.

  12. faustus says:

i think the media has been more on top of fleshing this story out than the “officials” that have been sitting on this way even before mrs ramsey fell to cancer. the dude is 4sure way way sick…. of 4sure has been that way for some time….and it makes me sick to think that sick dudes like this can’t get help before someone innocent gets hurt… where have all the flowers gone.. gone to graveyards everyone….

  13. Walter says:

    John,
You said that he was broke and needed a ticket home. This may be partially true.
I think he was going to be arrested for something bad over there, and nobody wants to spend time in a prison in that part of the world.
He probably molested some children over there and needed to get home quick. He is also obsessed with JonBonet and decides that he can claim to have been the one who murdered her and get his name FOREVER associated with the murder of this innocent girl. HE may just get a footnote in this story, but his name will be associated with her.
He also got his free ticket to the States.
I kind of hope he is guilt of this, as the Ramsey family needs closure.

  14. Roger M says:

    Yep; a free ticket indeed.
And maybe a quick run away from Far East Justice.
With some of the suspects in this case, I’m not sure WHO needs closure…..
Boulder Police dept. on the other hand, needs a larger budget. Where will they go next?

  15. GregAllen says:

We had a case something like this in my old hometown. There was a tragic murdered child and a local reporter (from the Fox affliate if I remember correctly) obsessed on the case so much until finally confessing to the crime! After a giganitic media storm where everyone assumed he was guilty, the local police figured out that he couldn’t be the guy.

I’ve heard another scenario about John Karr that seems farfetched but possible: He is copping to the Ramsey case to avoid peadophilia charges in Thailand knowing that there is some evidence which will cut him free in the US.

Anyone else think this guy looks like Davie Byrne in his early top-buttoned-up Talking Heads days? Creepy.

  16. GregAllen says:

David Byrne of John Mark Karr — separated at birth?

  17. Sean says:

Even if he was facing serious charges in Thailand, wouldn’t he get sent back to face those charges if he’s released on the murder charge over here? I’d think the prosecutors here would be pretty pissed to find out he was lying, and would be more than happy to send him back.

Then again, maybe he really thinks he knows enough about the case to fool everyone. Better to be in prison here than in a Thailand prison.

  18. jjf says:

    John

The other day I found myself needing a ride home and I did’nt nave enough for cab fare (no buses) so I came up with this idea. I was near a pizza shop that had free delivery so I would buy a pizza for 6.99.

Cheap ride, since he was going there anyways!!
Worked for some. Why did’nt it work for me??

  19. Mike Voice says:

9 He might even get a book deal as a bonus. But he was only after the free trip.

A free trip: in a window seat in business class, drinking champange and eating prawns…

    http://www.iht.com/articles/2006/08/21/america/web.0821ramsey.php

An Associated Press reporter on the flight wrote that Karr chatted amiably with other passengers at the gate in Bangkok, and that once on the plane, seated at a window in business class with three federal and Boulder County escorts, he sipped champagne and drank beer and chardonnay with a meal of fried prawns, amid some speculation that investigators might have been trying to get him to open up.

Open up? He has already “confessed”, hasn’t he?

Of course his not the killer. On the pres con he kept moving his eyes & his body languages is a major dead give away while saying “I killed Jon Benet” his eyes move left to right somewhat uncomfortable & kept moving touching his face, scratchng his head.
My money is still on the crappy mother who made a her daughter into an underage Barbie doll!!! The DNA evidence doesn’t mean an actual conviction. But more of him being present on the scene of crime.
The evidence can’t seemed to hold a candle. Just bcoz DNa is found cannot easily mean that he killed her. He may have sexually assaulted Jon Benet & Jon Benet may struggled coz’g a small blood splat on her dress.
Just CSI you’ll get my point!!!

  21. Mr. H. Fusion says:

I like the opinion expressed by John C. Dvorak in post # 9. This seems to be a reasonable explanation for the murder of JonBenet Ramsey . The Boulder Police have done a terrific job in following this crime and bring the suspect to justice.

We should also give acknowledgment to W.K.W. For his uncanny ability to decipher the basics of this incident.

I agree post #9! BTW one youtuber
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jT8YdNHAKhM
said that Karr was all made up (had make up on!!! ) during his arrest in Thailand!
Boy you really wish that Mel Gibson did the same coz his mugshot was crazy!!!
