IGN: E3 Cancelled? — First they minimized the booth babes, now this.

According to a report at Next-Generation, E3 2006 may have been the last Electronic Entertainment Expo ever, at least as we know it.

While no official announcement from the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) — the foundation that organizes E3 — has been made as of yet, the buzz around the videogame industry this weekend is that E3 is no more.

The reasons for the change are mostly economic. As Next-Generation reports, “the larger exhibitors have jointly decided that the costs of the event do not justify the returns, generally measured in media exposure.” Larger companies such as Electronic Arts, Activision, and Midway have long organized their own individual gamer days for the press to see and play their upcoming titles.

Hmm…. So we are left with TGS?

I don’t know what to make of this

  2. Central Coast says:

Guess this years dress code for the “Booth Babes” didn’t work out so well. 😉

  3. SN says:

Why doesn’t someone get smart and have an trade show devoted exclusively to booth babes?!

  4. The Freaky Tiki says:

You can bet your bippy that the software makers that used to go to this will now roll thier advertising/E3 dollars into Comicon International held in San Diego every year.

    my 2¢

  5. Mark says:

I’ve noticed on another games related site that E3 hasn’t been canceled but more downsized.

    according to arstechnica.com.

“Contrary to reports across the web, E3 has not been cancelled. Next-Gen had hoped that they would blow the lid off of a hot story by revealing that the show had been cancelled, but some quick fact checking shows that they are simply incorrect.
“Sources close to the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) tell Ars Technica that the show can and will go on, but that big changes are planned.”

  6. James Hill says:

    @3: SN, I still wouldn’t go.

@4: Comicon is just the hot convention of the moment. In two-to-three years it will fall out of favor and another show (probably GenCon) will become “the” show.

This really does make sense: Trade shows are about hype, not about knowledge. Hence, hype dictates which trade shows live and which shows die.

  7. ECA says:

    Dont ya love it.
Overpricing of Booths, to make a profit.
    Cutting the coverage to NIL.

sounds like we are shooting ourselves inthe FOOT, business practices. Only in the USA.

  8. RTaylor says:

Why bother? The companies get very little coverage from major news outlets. They’ll get a five minute spot on the morning news, and half of that dedicated to the most useless products. The rest of it is anchors questioning the need of a product or shaking their head in a condescending way. There’s far better ways of spending advertising dollars and far cheaper ways of dealing with vendors. The only ones that makes money out of these things is Los Vegas businesses.

  9. Angel H. Wong says:

Maybe if E3 had small plastic pools full of jello where the booth babes from Sony wrestle against the Booth babes from M$ while the Nintendo Booth babes (dressed as catholic school girls) hand 1pint jugs of free 5 grain beer…

  10. ECA says:

I would LOVe to let consumers into these SHOWS…LET them pick whats good or bad.

  11. Well thats no fun,
E3 had by far the best booth babes.
    Damm!

  12. dex says:
