We covered this when the dude was busted.

A Border Patrol agent who admitted smuggling more than 100 illegal immigrants into the U.S. from Mexico, some of them in his government truck, was sentenced to five years in federal prison Friday.

Prosecutors had asked for 37 months, but U.S. District Judge John A. Houston decided a stiffer punishment was required for Oscar Antonio Ortiz.

Nice to see a judge give tougher than asked, once in a while.

  1. Erowid says:

Hmm… he probably would’ve got less time for drug smuggling.

What’s the difference between smuggling drugs and smuggling wetbacks?

    The USA wants/needs the drugs…

    ;-)_~

  2. John Paradox says:

It turns out that he came into the U.S. illegally, and was arrested for trying to bing two across. Here’s the update

    J/P=?

  3. Mr H. Fusion says:

It brightens my little heart to see that the government takes its mandate seriously. Law enforcement officers of any kind require a higher degree of honesty and trustworthiness. For every officer or agent that is dirty, it tarnishes thousands of good, motivated, professional people doing a good job.

Is five years too much? I don’t think so. He violated the trust of his job and admitted in smuggling 100 illegals across. When he is released, he will be deported as well. I’m happy.

  4. Max says:

So I’m confused. It’s okay not to enforce the laws regarding illegal immigration, but it’s okay to punish those that “smuggle” more illegals over? Somethings askew in Liberal-ville.

  5. Mr. H. Fusion says:

    Max, how do you figure?

The guy not only broke the law, he violated the public trust. Not only he, but EVERY illegal he assisted across the border should also be punished as well.

I think you will find that it is the conservatives mostly in favor of retaining the illegals. It is a cheap job pool which in turn lowers their costs. Most middle and lower (economic) class Americans see it for what it is. Lowering their benefits and wages to the lowest denominator.

  6. AB CD says:

    >is the conservatives mostly in favor of retaining the illegals

Now that’s funny. I’ll grant you Bush and McCain and some other Senators, but it’s the Democrats that are wholly on board with bringing in as many Mexican immigrants as possible, and max amnesty for illegals already here.

  7. Teyecoon says:

Kind of funny how we have hired a “fox to guard the henhouse”. I guess border patrol is one of those jobs “Americans will not do”. I’m sure he stopped everyone except for his friends and relatives and their friends and relatives and those that supplemented his minimum wage job. We all know that humans are known for their strict adherence to duty and responsiblity over personal gain. That’s why we don’t have/need any tough controls over our corporate and gov’t leaders.

The only way to make this [anything] really work in this country is to appeal to greed. Give them a bonus for everyone they return and you’ll have the hardest working most efficient border guard service of all time. This would work for corporate and government “snitches” also to keep our institutions honest. You have to use greed to fight greed because our foolish method of using ethics/morals to fight greed is like trying to slay a dragon with a toothpick.

  8. Mr H. Fusion says:

AB CD, can you give me ONE example where a Democrat Congressman or Senator is encouraging MORE illegals to enter the US?
