With loss of ad revenue to the web along with increasing paper, energy, and shipping costs, it isn’t surprising that the NY Times is having to tighten its belt.

The New York Times Co. plans to reduce the width of its flagship newspaper by an inch and a half and close a printing plant in Edison, N.J., resulting in the loss of about 250 jobs, the company announced Tuesday.

The changes at The New York Times will go into effect by the second quarter of 2008, the company said in a statement early Tuesday, and will save about $42 million a year. The job cuts account for about one-third of the Times’ total production work force of 800.

I just hope this is enough. I’d hate to see the Times go out of business, it would mark the end of an era.

Well, it is interesting that the WSJ decided to pimp their front cover for advertising to deal with this very issue.

Fusion…..what AB CD says is true….the editorial page is conservative to very conservative at the WSJ…..but the rest of the paper is moderate to liberal.

And Smartalix……why is it called *pimping* to put ads on the front page of the biggest Business newspaper in the world? It is after all the *trade paper* for the business community.

As to Fox…..I apparently don’t watch as much of Fox as some of you more liberal types…..I watch the news part of it and I read their on-line news pages and science page. But I have never seen one of their *commentary* shows(ie. Hannity/Combs, OReilly etc.), in fact, I’ve never seen their morning shows. I will admit to watching Greta Van Suskind? when the Peters trial was on.
I don’t see anything wrong with their hard news shows, they present it differently, but not the substance of the stories and many times they are more in depth than the big networks and CNN. I don’t see the news shows preaching or defending anyone.
The show I do love to watch on Fox is the Special Report with Brit Hume. He is a conservative and slanted on politics, but he presides over an eclectic bunch and the program can get quite heated at times. Plus, the show is usually right on when it comes to politics, they have some savvy folks on the show.
I used to watch the Sunday show when Tony Snow had it, and enjoyed it, all the movers and shakers would be fighting and scratching and trampling eachother to get on that show, from both parties. I rarely watch it now with Chris Wallace.

A publication if quality should not have to resort to using their front cover for advertising. Are you picking up that publication for its news or its ads? Why not make the entire front page ads?
