When in Rome folks!

Expatica – July 12, 2006:

A McDonald’s fast-food outlet in the south east of the Netherlands has agreed to remove urinals that are shaped liked wide-open red lips.

The decision was taken after a shocked American customer complained to the McDonald’s head office in the US.

Owner Giel Pijper said on Wednesday that the bright red, mouth-shaped urinals, named ‘Kisses’, are works of art. But a different view is taken of them in America. The urinals are being removed and will be sold off. “I’m not going to harp on about a pair of urinals,” he said.

  1. It just makes McDonalds look like the a-holes they are.

  2. DreadEgos says:

On second thought, I suppose it could be Ronald McDonald’s mouth.

  3. Max McElroy says:

If this is not an example of poor tort law, I don’t know what is. The musical works of some go ignored and traded without any concern for copyleft laws europeans claim to be adopting. If slavery is the issue then why can’t we have free trade with a bunch of nobodys who been through it all and claim to be free.

  4. Mr. H. Fusion says:

Maybe the Americans can do this right,

Two urinals side by side. One shaped like a Ford, the other shaped like a Chevy. Is there any “real” American that could find fault with that?

  5. doug says:

huh – Islamists think we’re degenerates, Europeans think we’re prudes. must be doing something right!

  6. Kent Goldings says:

I wonder If I complained about the trans-fats in the fries…they would remove them.

  7. rus62 says:

I am surprised the person who complained didn’t mention that (Western) European bathrooms are a helluva lot more cleaner than ones here in America. I’ll take a clean bathroom anyday over the filth I have found in American McD’s bathrooms or for that matter other establishments here in the US.

I wonder how many people stand further away after seeing those teeth? 🙂

  8. Angel H. Wong says:

I bet that customer is Evangelic, they’re the only ones in world who will go to extraordinary lengths to force their POV/lifestyle into other’s…

  9. Mr. H. Fusion says:

#18, We had a moment of silence here. I hope you feel better now. That must have been quite traumatic.

  10. rus62 says:

#15 – Yeah, I saw some filthy ones but that was in Italy. No offense to the Italians I saw some clean ones there too. On the most part that is what impressed me with German, Austria, and Swiss. on my first trip in 80s. Maybe we didn’t go to the same places.

  11. GregAllen says:

This American – European cultural clash is the narcisim of small differences. The American – Canadian clash even makes less sense to me

When I travel in Central Asia or parts of the rural Arab world and then I go to Europe… I can hardly tell the difference between Europe and the US.

Oh, of course there are differences but they seem minor compared the huge culteral differences of other parts of the world.

In Europe I can sit in a public place and pretty much guess what most people are doing, even if I don’t understand the language. In some parts of the world, I can look around and not understand what half the people are doing.

  12. spsffan says:

This is the kind of thing* that happens when women are allowed into the men’s restroom.

*I mean, both the urinals themselves, and the complaint about them.

And what is it these days with artists and piss? Doesn’t anyone paint anymore?

  13. jwhennig says:

Didn’t anyone ask what she was doing in the men’s room?
